Ch 75 : Conspiracy

In the Hokage office.

Makoto looked at a row of dark blue vials on the desk, holding one carefully in his hand, inspecting it.

This was the new drug that Orochimaru had just sent over through a messenger.

According to Makoto, the drug, when injected into the human body, would temporarily make the person immune to various toxins.

It was called immunity, but in reality, it could be understood as merely isolating the toxins in a small "black room."

The side effect was that once the drug's effect wore off, the accumulated toxins would all explode at once.

At that moment, Hakumen also brought a letter, sent from the Land of Rain.

Makoto glanced at the contents.

Essentially, the Akatsuki Organization, after receiving his warning, had also noticed the conspiracy of Hanzo of the Salamander from the Amegakure against them, and they were willing to cooperate with Konoha.

However, the letter didn't stop there.

It went on and on with the Akatsuki's principles, stating that they would remember Konoha's favor, but would not assist Konoha in any future military actions.

If Konoha couldn't accept this, the Akatsuki would try to repay the favor with money and resources in the future.

Makoto couldn't help but chuckle inwardly.

The leader of the Akatsuki, Yahiko, was quite straightforward.

Such an overly idealistic organization is destined to not last long.

Up until now, they have only saved the lower class, gaining many followers and supporters, making their journey seem smooth.

But how could such actions be tolerated by the higher-ups of this country?

Once they become strong enough, and attract the attention of the rulers, their downfall is inevitable.

No king would want a savior who is loved by the people to emerge under their rule.

The original Akatsuki organization's fate in the source material reflected this.

Under Hanzo's tactics, it was stillborn.

However, with Makoto's help now, at least they can go a little farther.

Makoto immediately wrote another letter, asking Hakumen to deliver it along with the blue vials to the Akatsuki in the Land of Rain.

The guard ninjas at the main gate of Konoha sent word that the Third Hokage had left the village.

Makoto, upon hearing this, was not surprised.

He simply instructed a few Anbu to go and protect the Third Hokage's safety.

Everything was developing in the direction he had anticipated.

........

"Chunin Exam?"

"Why are they suddenly holding the Chunin Exam?"

In the dango shop, several young boys and girls sat together.

Anko, with a bamboo skewer still in her mouth, said,

"I also heard it from Lord Orochimaru. The exam will be in about a week, and it's going to be a large-scale event. They want everyone in the village to come and watch."

On the opposite side, Shiranui Genma, without thinking, laughed,

"Seems like you're the only one here who hasn't become a Chunin yet, Anko."

Anko shot him a glare, feeling like he was mocking her.

Kurenai then said, "Anko wasn't in our batch, so it's normal for her to be a year or two behind."

Asuma thought for a moment and said, "It's actually a good time for the village to hold the Chunin Exam. I think they're trying to heal the wounds from the war and, at the same time, screen some talented ninjas."

Everyone had not considered this aspect before, and upon hearing Asuma's words, they fell into thought.

The Chunin Exam during wartime had a simpler process, mainly focused on individual assessments.

A large-scale Chunin Exam like this one only happens in times of peace.

Ebisu asked, "Besides Anko, who else is participating in the Chunin Exam?"

Anko replied, "Gekko Hayate and Uzuki Yugao, they are from my batch. You've met them before."

Genma nodded in understanding, "Oh, those two sword-wielding lovebirds."

Anko's circle of friends was slightly older than her, mostly people she got to know through Kurenai, and they all got along well.

These people had all been on the battlefield and were already Chunin.

Only she had never been to the battlefield since the war began.

She knew it was because of Orochimaru's influence, and she felt indifferent about it.

Whether or not she went to the battlefield didn't matter to her.

Asuma smiled and said, "You better prepare well during this time, or it would be quite embarrassing to be eliminated in front of so many people."

Yamashiro Aoba nodded in agreement, "Good thing I didn't have to deal with this kind of start."

Anko, however, looked disdainful.

"I'm Lord Orochimaru's student. How could I be intimidated by such a small event? The Chunin Exam will be a piece of cake for me."

The news of the Chunin Exams quickly spread throughout the village after being announced by Makoto.

This time, the exams would also invite participants from the neighboring Sunagakure and some smaller villages from surrounding nations.

This event instantly sparked the enthusiasm of many villagers.

Given that the war had only recently ended, this would undoubtedly be a grand event that everyone looked forward to.

Although the Chunin Exams seemed to be happening soon, the preparations had actually begun long in advance.

Such events, beneficial to both the country and the village, naturally received the support of the Daimyo.

Officials from within the country and nobles from foreign lands would also be invited, as per tradition.

The primary person in charge of the Chunin Exams was Nara Shikaku, the head of the Jonin class.

The responsibility for maintaining law and order during the event would fall to the head of the police force, Uchiha Fugaku.

Makoto met with Fugaku again to discuss matters related to the Chunin Exams.

He advised Fugaku that if the Root personnel were removed from the police force now, there would inevitably be insufficient law enforcement resources during the exams.

Fugaku said, "Do you think the Uchiha clan would be so irresponsible?"

Makoto smiled, "Please rest assured, Fugaku-senpai. I will make sure to talk to Lord Danzo beforehand. All members of the police force, including Root, can be freely dispatched by Fugaku-senpai during the exams."

Fugaku scoffed, "Do you really think I need anyone's permission to mobilize the police force? As the head of the police force, I've always been independent."

Makoto responded, "Please bear with me for a while longer, Fugaku-senpai. After the Chunin Exams, all grievances will be resolved."

Upon hearing this, Fugaku's eyes glinted.

The Third Hokage had promised him that he would look into the matter, but there hadn't been any results yet.

With the Chunin Exams coming up, it seemed that the issue would only be dealt with after the event.

If he clashed with Root now, it would leave only a handful of people to maintain the village's law and order, which would be quite the joke.

But looking at Makoto, Fugaku felt something was off, as if someone behind the scenes was manipulating everything.

Was the Fourth Hokage plotting something...?

Not long after Fugaku left, Danzo proactively visited the Hokage's office.

This was his first time coming to meet with Makoto.

"Lord Danzo!"

Makoto lowered his posture greatly, immediately standing up and walking out from behind his desk to greet Danzo.

Danzo, however, did not show him much courtesy, and as soon as they met, he asked directly about the preparations for the Chunin Exams.

Makoto replied that everything was progressing smoothly and that the event would be held as scheduled.

Danzo continued to ask several questions regarding the Chunin Exams, and Makoto answered each one, but he felt that the true purpose of Danzo's visit wasn't about the exams.

Seizing the opportunity, Makoto mentioned that there would be many external guests attending and hoped that Danzo's Root organization would fully cooperate with Fugaku in maintaining law and order during the event.

The timing of the Chunin Exams was perfect, and it would greatly benefit the village.

After a brief moment of thought, Danzo nodded in agreement.

He wasn't particularly concerned with the Chunin Exams, as his mind was currently occupied with matters concerning the Land of Rain.

However, with the exams approaching, he feared he wouldn't have time to attend to the situation in the Land of Rain.

Then, Danzo revealed the true purpose of his visit.

It was about the land ownership and property issues concerning the Uchiha clan.

Makoto was indeed surprised upon hearing this, and he couldn't help but marvel at how bold this old man was.

"Lord Danzo, you make a valid point, but with so many matters surrounding the Chunin Exams right now, it's difficult for me to split my focus. Could we discuss this after the exams are concluded?"

Danzo nodded in agreement.

He hadn't expected an immediate answer from Makoto; he just wanted to bring it up early so that Makoto could mentally prepare.

Danzo then left.

Now, Makoto was alone in the Hokage office.

He returned to his seat and looked at the letters on his desk.

If nothing significant were to happen during the Chunin Exams, it would be a disappointment to the Konoha tradition.
