Ch 114 : Like and dislike

"Rin, hurry up!"

Obito kept urging Rin, who was walking leisurely behind him.

"What are you doing?" Rin looked helpless.

She had been dragged out by Obito, who promised her a surprise.

"You'll know when we get there!" Obito said mysteriously.

The two of them arrived at an open area near the outskirts of the village, a place sparsely populated and close to the forest.

From a distance, Rin saw Makoto waiting there and couldn't help but feel puzzled.

Why is he here...?

Obito had already started shouting at Makoto and waving enthusiastically.

"Makoto! We're here!"

As they approached, Obito's face was filled with anticipation.

Rin couldn't help but ask, "What's all this about?"

Makoto glanced at Obito and said, "Ask him."

Obito grinned and said, "Rin, didn't you say before that you wanted to experience what it's like to fly?"

Rin was stunned for a moment and then looked at Makoto.

Obito continued, "So I asked Makoto to take us... take us both flying in the sky to try it out."

"..."

Rin felt both helpless and amused, but Obito's thoughtfulness also made her feel a bit pressured.

She said, "Obito... I'm actually not that interested in flying."

"Besides, flying isn't that big of a deal."

As she spoke, she deliberately glanced at Makoto, as if she was saying it just for him to hear.

Makoto inwardly scoffed—back then, he clearly remembered who was the most excited one up in the sky.

Obito was somewhat stunned.

He had finally convinced Shin to agree, but now Rin suddenly wasn't as excited?

He couldn't help but say, "We're here already, just give it a try."

He wasn't ready to give up, thinking maybe Rin's opinion would change once they were in the air.

Rin kept glancing at Makoto before slowly nodding.

Obito smiled and said, "Makoto, let's start."

Makoto replied, "Get ready."

Obito nodded vigorously.

Although the situation was different from what he had initially imagined, there was nothing else he could do now.

Makotos body slowly ascended before their eyes, and Obito could feel an invisible force pulling him up.

With a whoosh, the three of them shot up from the ground into the sky in an instant.

"Ah!"

Obito, experiencing this for the first time, couldn't help but cry out.

He had expected to rise slowly, like Makoto did, but the weightlessness of being high up made him feel very uncomfortable.

Looking down, still shaken, he exclaimed, "Wow... it's so high!"

Rin, unable to help herself, said, "Can you go a little slower? It's always so fast, who can handle this?"

Makoto, helpless, replied, "Next time, I'll go slower."

Obito didn't notice the subtle meaning in Rin's words, as he was too focused on the fact that flying in the sky felt completely different from what he had imagined.

Being several dozen meters above the ground, looking down made him feel dizzy.

"Obito, are you okay?" Rin asked worriedly as she noticed his pale face.

"I'm fine!" Obito forced a smile, but inwardly, he cursed himself.

He should have let Makoto take him up first so he could get used to it.

He tried to keep his spirits up, not wanting to embarrass himself in front of Rin, and said to Makoto, "Makoto, let's continue."

Makoto was also surprised that Obito seemed to have a fear of heights.

Seeing that he was trying to act tough, Makoto didn't push it and allowed them to continue flying forward in the air.

Obito was tense, unable to bring himself to look down, his eyes nearly squinting shut.

His body swayed unsteadily in the air.

He glanced at Rin, but she seemed completely calm and unaffected.

Why is Rin fine, but I'm feeling so miserable... Obito thought to himself, struggling.

Rin then suggested, "Obito, maybe we should go down?"

She was worried something might happen to him.

Obito refused to show weakness in front of Rin and forced a smile, saying, "Go down? Why go down? This is great, flying is really simple, haha..."

His body swayed back and forth, and he suddenly covered his mouth, as if about to vomit.

"Makoto, stop for a moment!" Rin quickly called out to Makoto.

The three of them stopped in mid-air, and Makoto, seeing Obito's condition, silently sighed, thinking that this guy really wasn't cut out for this.

Obito took a moment to recover, patting his chest and taking deep breaths.

He looked at Makoto and Rin.

Makoto, of course, had no problem with flying, but Rin was also moving with ease in the air, with no sign of it being her first time.

Obito was puzzled.

Could this be a matter of talent?

His stomach churned, and he realized that if he continued, he would definitely embarrass himself.

But if he went down now, wouldn't everything be for nothing?

Obito gritted his teeth and reluctantly said, "Makoto, how about... you take Rin for a flight? I'll stay here and rest for a bit."

Rin frowned and said, "What's the point of flying? Let's just go down."

But Obito replied, "We've come this far. We can't just give up. Makoto, please."

Makoto allowed Obito to slowly descend, and when Rin saw that only he was going down, she tugged at Makoto's arm.

Now, only Makoto and Rin remained in the sky.

Rin, feeling anxious, said, "Why are you..."

Before she could finish, their bodies were soaring up into the sky again, higher than before.

The view of Konoha below looked like a tiny palm-sized spot, and the clouds above were almost within reach.

Rin took a deep breath and said to Makoto, "Can you not be so overbearing all the time?"

Makoto lay back in the air, his hands behind his head, relaxed.

He replied, "What's wrong? Isn't this what Obito wanted?"

"You..."

Rin was angry and frustrated.

Seeing him still lying there with his eyes closed as if he were asleep.

She pursed her lips and asked, "Do you know why Obito is doing this?"

Makoto responded, "He likes you and wants to pursue you."

Rin hesitated before replying, "Then why are you still...?"

Makoto chuckled lightly. "What about it?"

Rin paused before saying, "Then why help him? Have you ever considered whether I want this or not?"

Makoto said, "That's his problem to deal with, not mine. He begged me so sincerely back then, so I just helped him a little."

He glanced at Rin and added, "Aren't you the one who likes Kakashi?"

"…Yes, everyone knows I like Kakashi."

"Does Kakashi like you?"

Rin fell silent for a moment before replying, "Liking Kakashi is my matter. What he feels for me is his matter. I won't ask Kakashi for anything, nor will I do anything foolish just because I think I deserve it."

Upon hearing this, Makoto chuckled softly.

"What are you laughing at?"

"I'm laughing at Obito, poor guy, doing all this."

Rin instantly became angry: "What he does is his own business. Why should I have to pay the price for your one-sided feelings? Was everything you did from the start just to get something in return? In the end, all you care about is yourselves!"

Her intense reaction surprised Makoto.

He didn't understand why she was so angry.

Rin was usually known for her gentle nature.

Makoto then asked, "Then why make him think that he still has a chance with you?"

Rin retorted, "All I gave him was friendship. Does not accepting his feelings mean I can't even be friends with him?"

Makoto said, "Humans are complex beings. How can the boundaries you set for yourself control others? If you draw a line for him, do you think he'll just accept it?"

"..."

Rin's expression slowly calmed down.

She looked up at the clouds so close by and suddenly reached out to touch them, only to find that the soft white clouds from below were actually cold and damp when touched.

She remembered the first time Makoto had taken her flying, when she first touched the clouds.

Looking at the water droplets on her hand, she murmured, "Such beautiful clouds, but this is what they really are. People on the ground probably never know, do they? If they found out that the thing they've always dreamed of is just a puddle of water, how disappointed would they be?"

Makoto didn't respond.

She said, "Let's go down."

The two of them slowly descended to the ground.

Obito was still slumped on the ground, a pained expression on his face, as if he hadn't recovered yet.

Rin noticed Makoto's indifferent expression and couldn't help but glare at him.

Makoto, seeing her reaction, shrugged. "What do you want me to do? I didn't expect him to have a fear of heights."

Rin scolded, "Isn't it because you were flying so fast at the start?"

Makoto chuckled lightly. "When we were flying together before, wasn't it the same speed?"

"I..." Rin was about to say something but suddenly realized the double meaning in Makoto's words.

Her face turned red, and she glared at him in embarrassment and annoyance.

Rin walked up to Obito and asked, "Obito, are you okay?"

Obito glanced at Rin and then at Makoto, giving a wry smile.

"This time, I really embarrassed myself."

Rin said, "Why did you have to do something like this?"

Obito scratched his head, awkwardly mumbling, "I just wanted to... make you happy."

"…"

This was the answer Rin had expected.

She felt no emotional stir at all, not moved in the slightest.

But seeing Obito still sitting there, his face pale, Rin's heart softened.

She said, "You idiot, you didn't need to do this... You want to get stronger and become Hokage, right? Just work hard toward that goal. Don't do foolish things like this in the future."

Rin's kindness immediately made Obito feel much better.

She's worried about me...

He nodded repeatedly and said, "Got it, Rin!"

Rin helped him up and said, "Alright, let's go back."

Obito then looked at Makoto and said, "Thanks, Makoto."

Makoto simply nodded lightly.

Although things didn't go as he had hoped, Obito felt that receiving Rin's kindness was still worth it.

He suddenly remembered that Rin seemed to adapt very well while they were flying earlier, and said, "Rin, it seemed like you weren't uncomfortable at all just now."

Rin immediately hesitated: "I... I didn't even notice."

Makoto then said, "People are different."

Obito laughed foolishly. "As expected of Rin, I think you could learn how to fly from Makoto."

Rin glanced at Makoto and said, "I don't want to learn."

Makoto raised an eyebrow slightly.

This girl is doing it on purpose.

She hasn't given me a good look since she saw me earlier.

Obito was puzzled. "Why don't you want to learn?"

Rin glared at him. "Why do you care so much?"

Obito immediately shrank his neck, not daring to say another word.

Rin's gaze shifted slightly, and she spoke softly: "Obito... there's something I want to talk to you about."

Obito blinked his bright eyes and asked, "Oh, what is it?"

Rin then glanced at Makoto before speaking to Obito.

"It's just between the two of us. Come with me."

Obito froze for a moment upon hearing this, then his heart leapt with joy.

He thought that Rin deliberately wanting to talk to him alone was a sign of intimacy.

"Makoto, you can head back. Thanks for today, I'll treat you to a meal next time."

He quickly walked up to Makoto, whispered a few words, and then hurried after Rin.
