Chapter 34

Back at the Calais refugee camp.

I met Lucas's colleagues.

Now, Doctors Without Borders has returned.

His former partner Adam has been promoted to coordinator for the entire Calais project.

When we first saw each other.

Without a word, tears flowed.

After sobbing for half an hour.

I told him I had come back to look for Lucas.

He took me to the warehouse.

Surprisingly, there were still some of Lucas's belongings inside.

"We left in a hurry, so many things weren't sorted out."

In that box, there was a deck of cards, a packet of flower seeds, a set of keys, several medical textbooks, a stethoscope...

All just bits and pieces.

Yet they were all intimately connected to him.

I felt as if I'd gone back three years.

On some afternoon, pushing open the door to his dorm room.

Seeing him sitting in a chair, reading.

Twirling a pen in his hand.

Seeing me, his eyes lit up with a smile, saying:

"You're here!"

Adam seemed wistful too.
