As soon as Tyler and Amara left, I locked the door, resting my forehead against the wooden frame. I took a deep breath, inhaling the faint scent of cleaning products and home-cooked meals—scents that had once made this house feel safe. But now, safety felt like a distant dream, something that slipped further away each time Declan reappeared in our lives.
With a sigh, I turned and surveyed the living room, deciding to clean up to keep my mind from spiraling. I picked up the pillows scattered on the couch, straightened the coffee table, and wiped down the surfaces. But no matter how much I tried to focus on the task at hand, the past lurked in the shadows of my mind, waiting to pounce.
And then, like a nightmare creeping into daylight, the memories flooded in.
