Chapter 28
Beatrice~
I was still lost in my thoughts, my mind spiraling through years of torment and pain, when a sudden knock on the door startled me. I froze. My heart pounded against my ribs, a cold wave of fear washing over me.
Who could it be?
Slowly, I rose to my feet, wiping my damp palms on the fabric of my dress. Maybe it was just a neighbor. Maybe it was nothing. But as I reached for the doorknob and pulled it open, my breath hitched.
The air was sucked out of my lungs.
Standing on the other side of the door, with his arrogant smirk and piercing gaze, was the devil himself. Declan.
Panic shot through me. My instincts screamed at me to shut the door, to lock him out. I tried—desperately, frantically—but I wasn't fast enough.
