Chapter 17

Emma walked in and as Sophie was about to enter, the maid stopped her, "Sorry, only her can go in. You can wait for her here if you don't mind." The maid said.

"Typical." Sophie said turning back.

Emma was now inside, it was a big living room. She looked around and saw Gabriel and Rachel sitting down on the luxurious couch. Without wasting time, Emma went to them.

"You are here, we have been expecting you." Rachel said to Emma when she got to them.

"Yes, we are glad you are here." Gabriel said.

"Thank you." Emma managed to say.

"Sit down." Rachel pointed at one of the couch.

Emma slowly went to the couch and sat down.

The atmosphere was awkward for Emma, she did not know what to say or what to do. But she decided to treat this as a job interview which she would be good at and it released some tension in her.

"I know you are smart so you must know why you are here." Rachel said. "We made our intentions clear when we asked you to marry our son Julian and now we want to get to know you." She continued.

"With the money and resources we have, we could have easily gotten the information we want about you. But because of what you did for us, we trust you so we want to get those information directly from you." Gabriel said.

What Gabriel said just now about having the resources and money to get information about her scared her a bit, she started to wonder what they could do with the kind of money they have.

She was somewhat relived but she had no reason to be because they was nothing bad about her that they can find out, she just did not want people looking into her.

"So tell us about you, your family and where you were born?" Rachel asked Emma.

"I am an only child, my mother and father are both entrepreneurs. I was born in a small town not close to this city." Emma replied.

"Oh, that's interesting. And how was your childhood?" Gabriel asked.

"It was okay, my family isn't wealthy but I was okay with it, I was contempt. After I finished with middle school I got a scholarship to study in a high school that took me out of my home town."

"Yes, we went through your resume, which was the only information we went through about you. And it was very impressive, you finished at the top of your class in high school and you won a lot of awards on cyber security and technology." Gabriel said.

"That was really impression, no wonder you got a job in our company, only the best minds get to work in our company. And now you are already contributing to more of our success." Rachel said.

"I only do my best in what I am good at. I am still striving for more, there is still a lot I want to accomplish."

"That is the kind of mind we need in our company." Rachel smiled.

Emma was mindful of the conversion she was having with Gabriel and Rachel. She knew that so far they seem to like her more and she was not helping matters, but she was not going to say something that would make herself look bad. She worked hard to get where she is now so she actually like the fact that Gabriel and Rachel acknowledged that.

"But this is not about you being in our company or our company's progress, this is about you marrying our son." Rachel said.

Things just changed fast for Emma after what Rachel just said, it was no longer about her.

"Marrying our son, you will become part of our family and you will have a lot of responsibilities. You will need to be a good wife and partner to our son, do you think you can handle that?" Gabriel asked.

The question Gabriel just asked her was a big question but it was also a chance to say something about the whole marriage that can put it to an end and she would not have to be dishonest.

Emma took a deep breath, "To be completely honest, I don't know how to answer that. I am still focused on my work so I haven't thought about marriage yet. I don't know if I will be a good wife or partner to your son."

There was silence for a while, and Emma felt like she has done it, and she did not have to say anything bad about herself or be dishonest.

"Well with everything you have told us and what we know." Rachel broke the silence. "I think you'll be a good fit for our son." She continued.

Emma was surprised to hear that, she just told them that she was not sure if she will be a good wife and Rachel still went on to say that.

"Yes, you are smart, brilliant, dedicated, and responsible. Ultimately you are a good person so we think you will be a very good fit." Gabriel said.

"I know everything can be uncertain with this kind of marriage but the most important thing is that you are a good person. How do you think we got married?" Rachel faced Gabriel. "It was an arranged marriage and look at us now, happy as ever."

Now Emma started to feel overwhelmed, she could not think of anything to say or do.

"Also, another important thing here, the thing that will decide if this will work out is if you are willing to make it work, to put in the effort. So we are asking, will you be able to put in the effort?" Rachel asked.

The question threw Emma off, she was already overwhelmed and now this came. She had no plans of putting any effort to make it work but she knew that she could not say that.

"So what do you say Emma?" Gabriel asked.

A lot of pressure was now on Emma and she knew she could not stay quiet for long. "Yes…" Emma said.

"Great, that is all we want, we are happy to hear that." Rachel said.

Emma did not know when she said that, it was the same thing that happened when they asked her to marry Julian back at the event.

She was realizing something about herself, under pressure she could not make the right decision.

"With that out of the way, let us talk about the engagement." Rachel said.
