The man in front of me was an uncomfortable sight to behold. Slender, tall, bald, a big mustache that seemed to take a lot of care by its owner. His armor was more ostentatious than the rest of the soldiers. He was of a higher rank than the rest.
"And I was under the impression that scavengers were vermin that only thrive on stealing what they could put on their pockets from the remains of battles" he played with his mustache with his right arm. "Never in my life I would think to see one playing hero."
He extended his arms and looked to the sky with both eyes wide open. The creepy smile never left his face. I was starting to feel sick on his presence.
"Thank you, Karitha, for this blessed experience!"
The rest of the soldiers followed his movement. It was a bizarre display, one that made me feel uncomfortable to watch. I stood there observing their show of devotion. They were soldiers of the Holy Kingdom, all right.
"And now, what should we do with our little scavenger" he lowered his sight to me and his arms to the side.
"Look, all I want is to leave unharmed with these children... So if you just let us go, that would be nice of you" I tried to bargain, my grip on my sword was tight because I could feel a thick tension in the air.
"Yes. Karitha does teach us about good deeds. We are better people every time we do selfless acts" The way he said that caused me to want to vomit, like there was malicious intent in such words.
He grabbed from his back a morning star and held it in front of him. I knew it was not going to be easy.
"At the same time, it teaches us to punish the heretics. And you, my dear friend, attacked two soldiers of the Holy Kingdom"
He broke the distance on one jump and attacked with his weapon on a big fast swing. I raised my sword and managed to put it between us. All of his movements were bizarre, almost elastic, causing me to feel creeped out.
STR vs DEF Check!
50 vs 10+12
50?!
The next word that the system showed was Tie. How was that a Tie was beyond me, but it was not much help. I only managed to avoid a direct hit.
-70
I went flying a couple of meters and fell on my feet. My legs barely managed to keep me and I fell to my knees. Slowly I felt the pain from the blunt hit Injust received. My HP bar was reduced from 100 to just 30, putting me again in the danger zone.
"The vermin is full of surprises," said the tall man "Not only did he get lucky on the Check, he gets a bonus from somewhere. Who are you?"
"Only if you say your name first" I demanded. I was not going to give the courtesy.
He smirked and laughed. "Ahhh... Where are my manners? My name is Balor, captain of the 5th holy battalion." He bowed, his form made it look uncomfortable. "Now, would you kindly tell me yours?"
I looked at him. I was just trying to make some time as if something could happen in my favor. Or at least a chance to escape.
"Marcel. I just got here by accident" I responded.
"So, you are just going to keep your mysteries? No problem, anyway. You are dead already"
He attacked once more. "No mercy!" He yelled and a small light appeared under him. That was another skill. A reflection of his morning star appeared on the other side, swinging them at the same time.
After that attack, if it tied again I would not resist it. What will happen then? If my HP reaches 0 will I just die? Just like that? I needed to do something, anything. Just to keep me alive. But my body did not respond in time. The attack was closing in, about to hit.
A cloud of dirt formed when the attack concluded. The smile on Balor disappeared when he saw what his skill connected with: nothing. His morning star caused a small crater on the ground. He looked behind him and then smiled once more.
What I felt was that someone grabbed me by the back of my collar and yanked me out of the attack area. In just the last moment, I was pulled away and taken to a safe distance.
When I processed I was saved once more I was thrown to the ground.
"Don't get used to me saving your helpless ass, human" Said a female voice that I did recognize.
I turned around and looked up, it was Kali! For some reason, she saved me from certain death. I grunted, but did not complain and just slowly stood up.
She was looking towards Balor and made her scythe reappear and held it on a defensive position, smirking.
"Wait, the kids!" I yelled, remembering them. My gaze went looking for them at the spot they were when the battle began. They were running towards us, and behind them was Nayleth, guiding them to safety.
"So, it was true. The petty queen Kali was here. What did I do to deserve this blessing?" Balor turned completely to face her "I will be rewarded handsomely for your head, queen."
"Oh ho ho ho!" Kali placed her hand on her mouth to laugh on a regal and mocking tone "Strong words for someone about to learn the strenght of the Demon Queen first hand! We all know they sent you here because you were useless anywhere else."
Balor's expression shifted and turned angry. She seemed to have hit a nerve with that answer.
Nayleth reached us and nodded at me. A smile was on his face while looking at me, and then at the children. He raised his hand towards me and a light engulfed both of us.
The pain left my body and I saw my HP bar refill. I was back to 100 out of 100.
All I wanted right then was just to return home.
