Garfield hesitated for just a moment before stepping forward, ready to speak.
However, before he could say anything, Extraordinary Gwen quickly pulled him back.
Seeing Garfield injured from his fight with the Lizard deeply pained Gwen. There was absolutely no way she would allow him to participate in something as dangerous as an interstellar war.
At this moment, she was like a mother hen fiercely protecting her chick.
Peter chuckled softly and said, "Relax, I'm not here for him. Actually, the main reason I came to this world is to take two people with me."
"Who?" Gwen remained on high alert despite Peter's words.
Peter raised a finger. "One of them is Dr. Lizard, also known as Dr. Connors, who turned into the Lizard."
"Dr. Connors?" Garfield spoke up. "No way. If you need someone for something that dangerous, I'd rather go myself."
Peter replied, "I think it's best to ask him directly. I believe he'll agree."
Both Garfield and Gwen were puzzled by Peter's confidence.
Peter had no intention of explaining further. Having seen the full story, he understood Dr. Lizard's inner conflicts and knew exactly what he wanted.
Sometimes, villains are more straightforward than heroes.
As long as you offer a villain what they desire, they can be persuaded to work with you.
Moreover, Dr. Lizard wasn't entirely evil. At least, in his human form, he was relatively normal. It was only after injecting the lizard gene serum that he exhibited many of his more extreme behaviors.
"You know where he is, right?" Peter asked, turning to Garfield.
Garfield hesitated before nodding. "I can take you to him, but if he doesn't want to go, you can't force him. If you try, I will stand by him."
"Sure, don't worry. I've never been one to force anyone," Peter replied indifferently.
"Peter..." Gwen looked at Garfield with concern.
Garfield gave a slight shake of his head, shot a web to pull his spider mask from a table nearby, and started walking towards the door.
Peter smiled wryly. There was no way he'd harm Garfield.
Without further explanation, he activated his nanotechnology, allowing the particles to flow and form a spider mask that covered his head.
"Let's go," he said, leaping out of the window.
Gwen pulled her mask from her hood and followed closely behind.
Garfield paused beside Gwen, planted a quick kiss on her cheek, then donned his own mask.
"Gwen, wait for me."
"Mm-hmm," Gwen swallowed the rest of her words.
Whoosh!
Garfield jumped out as well.
The three of them regrouped on the rooftop across from Gwen's apartment.
The Paper Vulture, looking bored, tapped his foot. "What took you guys so long? I was getting so bored I almost threw a few bombs just for fun."
Peter shot him a glance. "If you throw a bomb, I'll break one of your ribs."
"Heh, I was just kidding. No need to get mad, boss," the Paper Vulture replied with a sycophantic grin. "Gotta have a sense of humor, right?"
"Oh? Even bird-men need a sense of humor?" Peter quipped, eyeing his wings.
The Paper Vulture cackled, "Of course! Without a sense of humor, I'd just be a bird. But with it, I'm a bird-man!"
Behind them, Garfield suddenly halted.
What is with this conversation? They definitely don't sound like good guys!
"Alright," Peter cut the banter short. "We're heading into the city sewers to find someone. You find a quiet spot to rest for now."
"Got it, boss," the Paper Vulture replied. "Need any help? I've still got plenty of bombs on me."
Peter: ?
"Are you seriously not taking me seriously?" Peter said, gripping the Paper Vulture's shoulder.
"Gah gah gah—" the Paper Vulture squawked, flailing as he begged for mercy. "Sorry, boss, I was wrong! Please, let me go! I've turned over a new leaf. From now on, I'll stick close to you and be a good man… I mean, a good bird-man."
"That's more like it," Peter released his grip. "Remember, don't cause trouble, and don't show yourself in front of civilians. When I need you, you'll have your chance to act."
"Yes, yes, got it, boss!" the Paper Vulture replied obediently.
After dealing with his troublesome subordinate, Peter turned to Garfield. "Let's go."
Garfield sighed inwardly but said nothing. He spun around, leaped backward with a somersault, and jumped off the tall building.
Directly below him was a manhole cover leading to the city sewers.
As he neared the ground, he shot out a web, pulling the manhole cover open.
His body plunged straight down through the opening.
Gwen followed right after him.
Then Peter.
At that moment, the manhole cover was still suspended mid-air.
Without even looking, Peter shot a web upward, yanked it, and…
Clang!
The cover fell back into place, sealing the entrance.
On a nearby fire escape, Extraordinary Gwen watched the manhole cover settle, her eyes filled with lingering concern.
Meanwhile, on the rooftop, the Paper Vulture glanced at the cover, then at Gwen in the distance. He jumped off the roof, spread his wings, and flew away.
In the City Sewers
Garfield, Gwen, and Peter moved in a line, swiftly crawling along the driest part of the sewer ceiling.
At the rear, Peter kept climbing while observing his surroundings.
The environment was, to put it mildly, unpleasant.
Below them was a channel thick with sludge, its sides coated in slippery moss. The stench was overwhelming.
Fortunately, Peter's nano-vibranium spider suit had an air filtration and purification system. If necessary, it could even go into full lockdown mode, with enough internal chemical supplies to last him several hours.
But how were Garfield and Gwen enduring this smell? After all, Spider-Man's senses are enhanced!
When Peter first descended, he hadn't activated the filtration. The stench hit him so hard he almost vomited his last meal.
"Seems like I should get Gwen a more advanced suit too. Maybe I can ask T'Challa and Shuri to help make another nano-vibranium suit," Peter thought.
Hiss—
Hiss—
In the dark, deep tunnels, faint hissing sounds started to echo.
Most of them were sharp and subtle.
Those were the sounds of lizards scurrying nearby.
But soon, a deeper, more guttural hiss roared through the tunnel.
Peter perked up instantly.
A normal lizard definitely couldn't make that sound.
In these sewers, only one being could produce such a monstrous noise.
Dr. Lizard!
