Kaine's Pov

The dense forest loomed before us, a wall of green and shadow. I inhaled deeply, letting my wolf senses take over as I shifted forms. Beside me, Edward did the same, his dark fur gleaming in the dappled sunlight.

"Ready?" I asked through our mental link.

Ed's blue eyes met mine, and he gave a short nod. "Lead the way, Alpha."

We were on the opposite side of the country, several hours from Banes Academy, searching for the deserted house.

We plunged into the thick underbrush, our paws silent on the forest floor. The scents of pine and earth filled my nostrils as we wove between towering trees. My mind raced, piecing together the fragments we'd gathered so far. Mina's testimony. The abandoned house from her memories. Scarlet. Too many coincidences for my liking.

"You're brooding again," Ed's voice broke into my thoughts. "I can practically hear the gears turning in that thick skull of yours."
