Chapter 8: Improv

Yeon-woo stared blankly at him, the words not really registering on her brain.

.

"It's pretty good, you don't want it?"

.

It's a tacky scene, a scene that depends on the actors to not make it feel old-fashioned or embarrasing.

.

They looked at each other with contrasting gazes.

This actor, Park Hyeon-do, is pretty good at making his character more charming.

.

Their chemistry is pretty good even at a script reading.

.

...

...

...

.

"Hey, Ki-beom-ah. Can I borrow your homework? I'll change things up, I swear!"

.

It's my turn now, my first scene. The whole things start when the drama starts expanding on the neighborhood. Prior to this, my character has been showing up here and there, but there is no much elaboration about her yet.

.

Yeon-gyeong is a bad student and she routinely asks for help with her studies to her overachiever seatmate Ki-beom.

.

Ki-beom obliged without saying anything as Yeon-gyeong sent him a lovely grin.

The kid who played Ki-beom got quite some scenes as well, it's just not really done in this reading.

.

This opening scenes cemented Yeon-gyeong as a carefree and daring character, in contrast to her sister who is quiet but resilient.

.

Playing Yeon-gyeong is fun and refreshing, the way she speaks is clear and weirdly righteous despite her doing stuff like skipping classes and copying homeworks.

.

Yeon-gyeong is an easy character to play most of the time. She isn't complicated in her day to day life. She only became more complex when it is connected to her sister. She is a familiar character in the sense that a figure like Yeon-gyeong is often seen in school or the neighborhood.

.

When I look at Yeon-gyeong I remember the kid that lives next door, he is naughty but he is not someone you would get annoyed with. When I see his antics, I laugh like a grandma would when she saw her naughty grandson.

.

I play her thinking of these qualities, the most important thing for Yeon-gyeong is to be liked by the viewers.

.

...

...

...

.

I waited for a while until another of my scene arrived. It was the bullying scene, where Yeon-gyeong witnessed the bullies' actions and bravely went against them.

.

These scenes are going to involve a little bit of action, but it was nothing too serious. It was basically a polished catfight because Yeon-gyeong has no settings of being a martial artist. However she has good strength and stamina because of her affinity with sports.

.

I yelled a lot and glared a lot. It made my voice a bit hoarse.

.

Through these scenes, I seem to sense a slight acknowledgement from my seniors. I am probably better at acting than what they expected.

.

The script reading continued with the actors and staff members getting a feel of the characters as well as improving the script when it was possible.

.

...

...

...

.

Finally, here comes the scene that would be part of the climax, the confrontation between sisters.

.

Jo Yeon-woo was frustrated about her sister, she never listened to her, she keeps skipping classes, and her grades are barely passable. However tonight we reach the point where everything overflowed.

.

Yeon-woo discovered that Yeon-gyeong has been skipping class to practice archery. It made her mad, leading to the conflict when Yeon-gyeong arrived home.

.

"Eonnie! I'm home!"

.

"You still remember to go home? I thought you'd be practicing archery until night," Yeon-woo was mad but she isn't the type to explode, instead she will turn cold and stab you with that icyness.

.

Yeon-gyeong's smile disappeared instantly.

.

"So what? Is it wrong?"

.

I stared at actress Jang Hye-jin, no that's Yeon-woo, with a challenging stare.

.

"The problem here is not your interest in archery, it's your attitude towards education. Who told you it's okay to skip classes and flunk all your exams!"

.

Her face is still icy, but her words are loud and stabbing.

.

If I have followed the script, Yeon-gyeong would respond by asking if she thought if grades are important than her dreams.

.

I wanted to try something different.

.

"Excuse me, can I try to improvise a little?"

.

A script reading is not just for the everyone to get a feel of the acting. It is also possible to give certain suggestions. Since everyone seem to acknowledge my skill for acting, I threw out that suggestion.

.

After I got my okay, actress Jang Hye-jin repeated her lines and I answeres with my own.

.

"Everyone knew I was bad at studying from the first time. I knew that too, no matter how much I tried, I can't go anywhere."

.

"Yeon-gyeong, that is still not an excuse! Do you know all the things that I did just for you to be able to go to school!"

.

Jang Hye-jin is cooperating as well.

.

"Is that what I want?! I don't want you to do all those exhausting jobs for me! I feel like a deadweight! Someone so useless that she can't help her sister in any way!" It is the first time Yeongyeong is so close to tears.

.

My voice softened, "I have money from my part time jobs...."

.

"If I win the regional archery competition, I'll have enough for my tuition until I graduate middle school. So, eonnie, don't worry about me and live your life."

.

Yeon-gyeong expressions are blank, but her tears are flowing continuosly.
