Hisssss
Everyone took in a deep breath at that announcement. A few days ago, they heard that Yu Yan was struggling on his deathbed, and now suddenly, he was at Body Tempering level 3? How did he cultivate? The attack that left him bedridden wasn't even at his body but only his head so it couldn't be said to be the recovery process.
A lithe figure suddenly rushed into the courtyard, the wind whooshing behind her and sending dust everywhere. The Fifth Elder waved his hand and th dust instantly settled revealing Mei Hua Lin crouching to check on Yu Yan not minding the filth around him.
After making sure he was okay, she breathed in relief and looked up at the Elder.
"Hua Lin greets the Fifth Elder" she bowed with her fists clenched and facing each other.
"Lin'er do you know what happened to Yu Yan?" The Fifth Elder asked smiling, his expression gentle, all of his usual sternness vanishing like the dust.
"Yes, Fifth Elder, Yu Yan recovered three days ago and could talk," Mei Hua replied respectfully. Although she was adopted by the Sixth Elder and enjoyed the status of a genius within the Yu clan, she was still very respectful and approachable to everyone in the clan.
"He could talk?" the Fifth Elder asked for confirmation to which Mei Hua nodded.
Everyone kept silent but they all understood what this meant. Yu Yan was no longer a fool! As they exchanged glances, they all knew what each other was thinking. The selection for Clan Patriarch this time would not be simple.
...
Elsewhere in the clan within another courtyard, a young man looking to be in his late twenties practiced diligently with his sword. The atmosphere around him was sharp, even the grasses on the ground seemed like standing swords as they pointed upwards towards the heavens. When the young man swung his sword, the grasses bent along with him as if they were the sword in his hand.
As the wind blew, a few leaves from the tree in the courtyard drifted towards him but were sliced into dust before they could even reach where he was.
A figure appeared by the corner of the courtyard and the young man stopped his practice to greet him.
"Father" he bowed with his clenched fists facing each other.
"Yu Hao, have you heard the news?" The man, a clean-shaven young man wearing farmer's clothing with a shovel in hand, asked. His expression displayed his pride in his son Yu Hao, but mixed in was some disappointment.
"I've been practicing the sword all day, father," Yu Hao replied, his jaw sharpened like his eyes. Every aspect of his body displayed sharpness and his sword was slim and straight as it pointed downwards.
Shaking his head, Yu Bo, dropped his shovel and directly sat on the cobblestone edge.
"Yu Yan has recovered and directly broke through to Body Tempering three" he announced with a relaxed and peaceful expression. His eyes trained on his son.
Yu Hao squinted at his father but said nothing. Why would this old man bother him now with such irrelevant detail, he wondered. But despite being obsessed with farming all day, Yu Bo was one of the clan's elites, being a genius back in his young days.
"Son, becoming Patriarch. . ." He paused and sighed as he remembered the rules.
Why the Yu Clan had such rules, or why they did things this way, he did not know; no one did, but no one broke the rules.
"Strength is not everything," he ended up saying, but without his son's reaction, he knew how ridiculous that statement sounded.
Yo Hao opened his lips to say something but was forced to close them again. After surviving outside the clan for so long, he knew firsthand how ridiculous what his father just said was. So ridiculous that he couldn't be bothered to refute it.
"Yes Father"
Staring at his son for a while, Yu Bo got up dusting off the sand from his backside as he did. There was nothing he could say, the Yu Clan needed a Patriarch, not a leader. During the last selection and everyone before that, all Legacies aside from the winners had fallen into the same trap. At least his son's was not the worst, even if he didn't become Patriarch, he would still have great status.
…..
Time passed, and soon, there were only two weeks before the Patriarch's selection. Yu Yan had been cultivating within the Pocket World during this past month and a half, and he was well rewarded for his dedication.
"Body Tempering level ten" he muttered to himself as he opened his eyes. He had reached the peak of the Body Tampering realm, but somehow, his cultivation felt imperfect. The Immortal Tome would not allow him to break through unless he fixed all those imperfections, so for the past week, he had been condensing his gains. Feeling the changes within his body and adapting to it. But nothing changed.
Sinking into the information from the Immortal Tome, he sought to find the reason for this early bottleneck and burst into mocking laughter once he did.
"How can I Temper my body with just Qi of heaven and earth without nourishing it with earthly treasures?"
Finally realizing the problem, he rose from his cross-legged position and observed the sprout he planted. It had grown about two inches but aside from the rising height, there was no other change.
Feeling helpless, he returned to the real world. Today would be his last day alone. His wedding with Mei Hua Lin was set for the next day. Invitations had gone out throughout the kingdom and he heard the Sixth Elder even went as far as inviting Nobles.
Although it was true that he had no feelings for Mei Hua Lin, he knew she was a sensible girl and that was the most important. As long as they could get along, he was fine with completing this quest lazily.
Taking a towel, he walked out of the room to see his two attendants outside the door. Zi Han and Zi Peng both at the peak of Foundation Establishment. They could be called geniuses but have given themselves to the Yu Clan in exchange for cultivation resources.
"There's no need to follow me" he ordered as he left the courtyard. Ever since his accident, the Old Patriarch ordered that Attendants be with the Legacies at all times. Although the attack seemed like an accident, Yu Yan and the upper class of the Yu Clan believed it was a deliberate attempt.
"Someone wanted to stop the Sixth Elder from gaining control over the clan." Yu Yan muttered to himself as he reached the stream running down Yu Mountain.
The Yu mountain was formerly known as Fire-Cloud Mountain, it was secluded from the Capital and surrounded by a lively forest. Every year, the Yu Clan would organize hunting sessions to train the younger generation and also keep the path leading down the mountain to the city free of wild beasts.
The mountain was rich in minerals, and for generations, the Yu Clan had utilized it to support themselves. After so long without exhausting the mineral deposits, many clans and Nobles had set their sights on the mountain but the Royal Family continued to preserve it for the Yu Clan.
The stream on this side of the river was safe, but from here, Yu Yan could hear the growling and hustling of wild beasts on the other side. Standing by the edge of the stream, he stared into the forest, trying to make out the creatures passing by in a blur, but he couldn't.
Just as he was about to give up, he noticed something that seemed like a grey cloud of smoke stop. Slowly the smoke cleared up to reveal a dirty grey wolf staring intently at him. There was intelligence in its eyes because it looked at Yu Yan as if he was insignificant, and for a moment, Yu Yan held his breath, staring as streaks of grey lightning surrounded the beast, bursting into clouds of smoke each time they made contact with its fur.
"What are you looking at?" A voice from behind startled him but he didn't need to turn around to know who it belonged to.
Mei Hua Lin soon appeared beside him in a green combat outfit. Following his gaze she saw the beast still staring at him and immediately reached out to push Yu Yan down, twisting their bodies so she was standing in front of him.
A moment later, a grey streak zapped through the air above them into the distance.
Sensing the power within that attack, Yu Yan felt his heart beating wildly in his chest.
"Wow, you are quite reckless," Mei Hua, still lying on him, said, her gaze fixed on Yu Yan's pale face.
Feeling her scrutinizing and criticizing gaze, Yu Yan felt awkward; the awkwardness was amplified when he felt her warm body on him; with her elbow on his chest, she supported herself to maintain a few inches of distance from his face, but a few inches was not enough!
Wealthy playboy Yu Yan was known in Hong Kong to be all talk and no bite. He hadn't even touched hands with any of his girlfriends. Some of it was because he was afraid of suddenly having to share his wealth with some baby mama, but most of it was…
"Shy too" Mei Hua playfully grinned before getting up from him. The beast on the other side of the stream was long gone by now and the forest seemed a bit quieter. All the beasts seemed to have been startled off by that attack.
"What was that?" Yu Yan asked, sitting up.
