Chapter 23 – Rest and Reflection

Kalen lay in the resting chamber, his breathing steady but deep. The exhaustion from the brutal training had finally caught up with him, his body forced into rest whether he wanted it or not. Beads of sweat still clung to his skin, the battle against the war construct having drained him completely.

Seraphine sat nearby, arms crossed, her gaze flickering between his unconscious form and the flickering candlelight. She had seen him fight, seen him push himself past his limits, but something about the way he collapsed unsettled her.

It wasn't just exhaustion.

Something was stirring in him.

Outside, beneath the towering lantern-lit pagoda, Li Zhi and Ichiro stood watching the other students train. The night was alive with the sounds of battle—the clash of wooden swords, the whoosh of spells being cast, and the disciplined shouts of warlock apprentices striving for mastery.

Ichiro exhaled, crossing his arms. "Been a while since we've had someone like him."

Li Zhi nodded slowly, eyes never leaving the training students. "He has potential. But he's reckless."

Ichiro smirked. "Reckless? That's how you used to be."

Li Zhi let out a rare chuckle. "And look where that got me."

They stood in silence for a moment, memories of their past flashing through their minds. Battles fought, allies lost, enemies crushed.

"Do you think he'll survive?" Ichiro asked at last.

Li Zhi's expression hardened. "That depends on him."

Just then, a voice rang out from the shadows behind them, smooth and laced with amusement.

"Damn. Y'all always this dramatic, or is it just 'cause I'm back?"

Both men turned. A tall, dark-skinned man stepped into the light, a wide grin on his face. His traveler's coat was worn from the road, but the golden around his neck gleamed under the lanterns. His eyes held a mischievous spark, yet there was something unreadable beneath it.

Victor had arrived.

Li Zhi's expression remained unreadable. "You never send word before showing up, do you?"

Victor smirked. "Where's the fun in that? Been a while, old man."

Li Zhi sighed. "Not long enough."

Ichiro narrowed his eyes slightly. "Who is this?"

Victor chuckled, crossing his arms. "Ain't nobody important, just a wanderer. Used to learn a thing or two from the old man here."

Li Zhi shook his head. "More like spent years ignoring half of what I taught."

Victor laughed. "Ain't that what made me so good?"

Li Zhi didn't answer, but something in his gaze softened, if only for a second.

Ichiro frowned. "So you're one of his former students?"

Victor shrugged. "Somethin' like that. Been a while since I last stopped by, though."

Li Zhi sighed. "You never just 'stop by.' Why are you here?"

Victor's grin widened. "I heard whispers. Somethin' about a warlock bloodline waking up." His eyes flicked toward the resting chamber. "Figured I'd see for myself."

And just like that, the air grew heavier.
