Chapter 29 - The Cruelty of Fate

Isabella’s POV

The earth seemed to shift beneath my feet, and even though I was sitting, my head swam with the weight of the emotions that flooded me upon hearing Eva’s words.

In truth, some unconscious part of me might have suspected what had happened even before Eva enlightened me.

My breathing became labored, and a steady ringing in my ears caused the noise in my background to fade.

“Isabella?” Eva called, pulling my attention to her. “Are you alright?” Eva asked, her brows furrowed with worry.

“I’m sorry,” the words slipped past my lips of their own accord. I wasn't sure what exactly I was apologizing for, but they were the only words I was capable of speaking just then.

“Oh, honey. Why are you crying?” Eva crooned, reaching up to swipe at my cheeks. “None of this has anything to do with you. You don’t have to be sorry.”
