Meliza's POV
A dull ache radiated through my body, every muscle sore and heavy. I groaned softly as I opened my eyes, only to shut them again when I realized my friends were gathered around my hospital bed.
The shame crashed over me. I wanted to disappear.
"Meliza, I know you're awake," Ruby said in a gentle but firm voice.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
I swallowed the lump in my throat. "I just want to be alone, Ruby," I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Alone? After everything we went through for you?" Frustration sharpened her tone. "Come on, Iza. For once, be honest with us."
Guilt twisted in my chest. "I'm sorry," I mumbled, attempting to sit up. The moment I moved, the room tilted, a sharp pain throbbing in my skull. I had no choice but to slump back down.
"I think we should give Iza some time to rest," Vince said, his voice thick with concern.
Slowly, I forced my eyes open, and my breath caught.
