Jeremy, The First Sample

Leo left the room a while later after the announcement. He didn't want to walk down the halls with the others. For now, he needed to know who was who, which one was dangerous or not, and he can only find that out in the evaluation test that is about to take place.

Loca had prepped him about earth's quirk evaluation test for students. They are to show their various quirks, fight against a few robots and then ranked according to one's performance.

Leo just hoped there are many like him in this test. He just can't afford to be the only one without an active quirk in this academy.

He stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for the first floor. A soft music serenaded him again till the el came to a stop. He stepped outside and found that the corridors are now empty, which was exactly what he wished for.

There was a system map on the wall to his right. He looked at it, trying to get where the evaluation hall is located. He pressed the option that showed [FOR FIRST YEARS].

instantly, the map turned and multiple locations started blinking before him. He located the evaluation hall and saw that it was just a space of two turnings from where he was currently. He closed the system and continued his walk down the corridor.

He was halfway across the first turning by a building when he heard somebody whimpering at a corner. Out of concern and curiosity, he branched to check who the person was, maybe he needed some help.

He got to the corner and saw a lean boy standing over a leaner boy. The one on top seemed to be doing some damage to the boy below, but Leo couldn't see what it was. The boy on the ground moaned in pain, begging for the other boy to stop whatever he was doing. But the one on top didn't even move an inch from where he stood. He was just gazing straight at the weak boy, with his teeth slightly open.

The boy's silent groan was disturbing Leo so much, and he felt he could help him. So, out of his pocket, he brought out the little blue pen-like device that Loca gave him before he stepped into the portal on Luxus. Then he tiptoed behind the standing boy. The boy was so engrossed in his torture of the other boy that he didn't even notice that someone else was in the corner with them.

"I already told you, Lam. I don't ever want to see your face. You disgust me!" He was screaming at the subdued boy while still maintaining his sharp gaze down at the boy's face.

Leo saw that this is the perfect time to act. He pointed the blue device out in the boy's direction and pressed the only button on it. The device shook a little in his hand and out came sharp blue lasers that hit the boy's back, which sent him crashing face first into the wall opposite him.

This was not what Leo expected the device to do, but at least he saved the boy called Lam. The wounded bully was about to stand again to see his attacker but Leo pressed the button two times consecutively, hoping to spend two blue lasers on him again, but this time it was the bubbles that came out. The deep blue bubble flew at the boy at amazing speed and wrapped itself round the boy, swallowing him till he was completely inside the bubble. With a flick of the device, the bubble started floating, following the direction where Leo pointed.

Now, he knows how to control the device. One click is for the lasers, two quick clicks is for the bubble.

Leo sent the "Boy in the Bubble" flying out the open field, high up in the sky, not caring if he survived or not.

"Are you okay?" Leo asked the tattered boy.

"Yes, I am. Thank you for saving me. That was a cool quirk by the way." Leo had hidden the blue device in his pocket so the boy wouldn't see that it was just a hi-tech device. "But where did you fly him to?" Lam was worried even for the boy who had almost killed him.

"Well, I don't know. Only the wind can decide that." Leo said.

"Thank you for saving me once again," Lam said. "But did you know what you just did? They will always come back me over and over again. Only this time, harder. It is sickening. These people are monsters who don't waste their pity on people with no quirk like me. They will come back... They will surely come back..." His voice broke.

"Calm down. Who are the 'they'?"

"Everybody. Anybody. Everyone who has an ability to beat you. Anybody you can't defeat in a fight. They will all come for you till you die. They say this world is not for the weak anymore."

"Well, I guess we just have to find a way to survive then. C'mon, cheer up and let's go the the evaluation hall. I just hope we're not too late." Leo pacified Lam.

Lam stood and dusted his torn shirt. "I just hope we're not too late," he repeated.

They walked together to the hall. When they entered, the evaluation test was about starting. Sil, one of the teachers, was standing on the stage with Mrs Black. Mrs Black was the one adressing the students.

"...since the teachers have all been introduced, let the test now begin." Her voice was so loud even though she wasn't using a mic.

"I don't know what her quirk is called, but it is something like sound control. Someone said she can make you deaf if she shouts," one of the students beside Leo was whispering to another student.

Leo only marveled by the wide range of quirks that is now in existence.

The rules have been announced before Leo and Lam got in, so the only way they could know what to do was to not be called first. Watching the others before them do it will make them have an idea of the test process.

"THE FIRST ON THE LIST IS JEREMY FLYNCH!" Mrs Black announced.

A sturdy boy stomped his way upstage with his fists clenched and his head bowed. He was on white T-shirt, a brown short and white shoes. Immediately, the stage was cleared and a set of bots dragged down the sheet from a set wall on the stage. The wall faced the other side of the stage and sideways to the student onlookers. So, the students could see how thick the wall was.

The wall was a brick one that rose from the stage in a single thick slab each. Seven thick slabs have been lined up against the other till they all joined together to form one thick wall of seven blocks.

The students are to face the wall and try to break as many blocks as possible. This first test will be used to determine the strength of each students quirk. Quirkless students too can try to break the wall with their fists, if they wish. But if they don't, the first test is cancelled for them and their mark is deducted in the assessment.

Jeremy Flynch stepped a few paces back, crouched a little and pressed his body forward like he was set for a race. As soon as the display board said [START], Jeremy jumped a little and picked up speed, running straight at the wall. His speed was more than normal. He has always kept his quirk hidden all this while.

The first year students watching gasped at the crazy attack that Jeremy was launching. Some covered their mouth in shock at the scene. For most of them, they had known Jeremy to either be quirkless or not possess an active quirk. So, they thought he stood no chance against this thick wall except if he could try punching it, but they didn't know he had this surprise in store.

Jeremy got closer to the wall without slowing down, and the gasps got louder. With no care, Jeremy ran straight into the wall.

The first block broke with ease, sending brown dusts all over the stage. But Jeremy wasn't stopping yet. The second block also shattered, but one more surprise was incoming. The third block also broke. He was about breaking the fourth one completely when his speed came to a halt. Then, he fell straight on his back, hurt and bruised.

The floor was now filled with sand. As Jeremy fell on the pile, dusts flew up in the air, partially masking the stage. No one moved to help Jeremy. Not even the teachers.

The information system displayed something on stage:

[JEREMY FLYNCH: D-RANK FOR QUIRK STRENGTH]

"No!" Jeremy yelled where he laid. Instantly, he jumped up and was waving his hands in the air at the teachers, complaining that he should have gotten more than that.

Hunter Man stepped forward, trying to restore calm. "You already heard the rules, Jeremy. You only broke three walls."

"And I also broke the fourth one. Even a flick of my fingers will send it collapsing now."

"Well, 'I almost did it' doesn't count, Jeremy. Just be proud of what you've done, and please prepare for the next test instead of complaining about the first."

Without waiting for any more words from Jeremy, Mrs Black announced the commencement of the second test.

"NEXT UP IS THE TARGET TEST!"

As soon as Mrs Black backed away, two bots came forward and planted a target board at the centre of the stage. It was shaped like a human and it moves left and right with varying speed on its wheels.

But one who doesn't have a active quirk or who doesn't have a quirk that does require throwing, cannot participate in this test. There was no use in picking external object and hurling them at the target.

Once again, this was a testament to the fact that the system does not care about weaklings, or passive quirkers anymore. Only a passive quirker who has real value in battle is considered. The rest are more or less outcasts.

So, Jeremy didn't participate in the next test. The third and the final one was the agility or speed test. A bot will walk on stage and start throwing harmless arrows at the student. After five throws, another bot joins the other and the speed increases until the arrow hits the student. The point is ranked based on how long the student lasts before being hit.

Jeremy performed quite well in this round, as he lasted a long time until the third bot joined and he was hit.

[JEREMY FLYNCH: B-RANK AGILITY TEST]

[JEREMY FLYNCH: D-RANK AVERAGE]

[D-RANK EQUIVALENT TO 3/7 RANK]

[CONGRATULATIONS]

Hunter Man walked forward and injected something from a device into Jeremy's wrist. Immediately, Jeremy's wrist showed the letter D glowing in a digital format.

"That is your rank for now. Congratulations." Hunter Man said. "And remember students, this is not the final rank you can ever get. You must improve yourself and try to rank up as much as the S-rank. And you can always walk up to the teachers to assess you again if you feel like you have ranked more than before."

Jeremy stomped down the stage after a medic have attended to him. He wore an angry look like he still wasn't satisfied with himself. He sat beside Leo, sulking and sweating.

"Woah Jeremy. That attack against the brick walls was insane. How reckless can you get?" a boy near Jeremy commented.

Jeremy replied, "what is a few bruises for a huge gain? And it wasn't even a huge gain. I have no option... I have to get stronger! I just can't afford to be weak!"
