In the middle of the room, a sort of training platform hovered.
Inside, I saw them: the White Wolves. Around twenty people, all of varying ages, but with the same vigilant look in their eyes. On their jackets, they wore the symbol of a white wolf's head.
"This is…" I searched for words.
"An anomaly," Shade completed. "A place between realities, created by the Resonance." He walked over to one of the displays. The bluish light made his scar stand out even more.
"But before we begin, you need to understand the world we live in."
The woman with the silvery-white hair paused her training. Between her fingers, orbs of pure energy materialized, pulsing like small suns. With a fluid motion, she extinguished them and walked toward us.
"New recruits keep getting younger," she remarked, giving me a scrutinizing look. Her eyes shimmered with an otherworldly silver, as if the Resonance was flowing through her irises.
"This is Echo," Shade explained. "She was one of the first we were able to save."
Echo crossed her arms. "The patrols are becoming more frequent. Yesterday, Kryntor's soldiers swept through two sectors again. They're starting to seem desperate."
Shade activated a holographic display. Three symbols materialized in the air: a majestic phoenix with wings that seemed to be made of flames, a sword encased in ice, and a blazing sun whose rays resembled daggers.
"The three houses of Prime Eden," Shade said, pointing at the symbols. "House Vayne, led by Dr. Lyra Vayne…" He paused briefly, casting a barely noticeable glance at me. "They conduct 'research' the public isn't allowed to know about."
Echo's silver eyes darkened. "Anyone who asks too many questions about the Resonance usually disappears. Just last week – a reporter. All they found was his camera in an alley."
"The truth comes at a high price here," Shade muttered. "The more you know, the more dangerous it gets. That's why we'll only teach you what you need to survive. The rest…" He shook his head. "Some doors are better left closed."
