When I went to see Ethan, I could still hear his gut-wrenching screams coming from the basement.
The assistant, showing remarkable perceptiveness, whispered to me, "Mr. Carlisle, it seems your wife has gone mad. She keeps yelling that she's you."
I smirked contemptuously, waving my hand to dismiss him.
I knew this basement all too well—dark, damp, and poorly ventilated, with a persistent musty smell that had lingered for years. In my previous life, Ethan, fearing I would run away, had kept me imprisoned here.
What was the purpose?
Of course, it was to bear a child for him and Harmony.
The Carlisle family, with only one heir for three generations, couldn't possibly allow a woman who couldn't produce offspring into the family.
I heard that Harmony had become infertile after miscarrying due to domestic violence during her pregnancy with her ex-husband, which led to their divorce and her return to the country.
My pregnancy seemed like a golden opportunity for them. For the Carlisle family, it didn't matter who gave birth, as long as the child was of Carlisle blood.
As soon as Ethan saw me, he tried to lunge forward, but his restrained legs forced him to an abrupt halt.
He glared at me furiously, "Vivienne, what the hell did you do to me?!"
I shrugged nonchalantly, "Just rumors! Vivienne, I seriously doubt your sanity. How about this? Hillside Psychiatric Hospital happens to be a Carlisle family property. Tomorrow, I'll have someone send you there..."
"You wouldn't dare! I'm Ethan! I'm Ethan! Don't you understand?"
Ethan roared, like a rabid dog.
I chuckled softly, "You're Ethan? Then who am I? Vivienne, stop going crazy. I'm not a patient person."
Ethan knew his own tactics all too well. He took a deep breath, abandoning his hysteria. After a moment of silence, it seemed he had accepted his current identity.
"I need to tell you something, and you have to believe me, even though I find it absurd myself."
I raised an eyebrow, looking at him.
"Actually... I'm Ethan from a parallel universe to yours. I was lying in bed with Harmony, and in the blink of an eye, I somehow became Vivienne..."
"You have to believe me. I am you, and you are me! I really am Ethan!"
I was stunned for a moment, feeling as if the person in front of me had truly gone mad.
"Tomorrow, I'll have a few psychiatrists come over to evaluate you first." Ethan panicked and waved his hands frantically. "No, no!"
He anxiously stomped his foot and finally let out a sigh. "Ethan, I was just joking with you, don't take it seriously. But could you please let me out first? This place is really..."
Unbearable?
That's exactly what I want!
I let out a cold laugh. "You don't still think you're Mrs. Carlisle, do you?"
"Vivienne, you just stay here and take good care of yourself during your pregnancy. Make sure my son grows up nice and chubby!"
"Me? Pregnant?! Are you saying I'm with child?!"
Ethan looked at me in shock.
I nodded. "Once you give birth to the baby, I'll divorce you and let you go. If you behave, your life will be a bit easier. But if you don't..."
Of course, I was just trying to scare him, but in my previous life, he wasn't just scaring me.
Back then, he said, if you don't behave, I wouldn't mind throwing you onto the family's private island. Even if you die, your remains will never be found. It'll save us the trouble.
"What do you want?"
"There are alligators on that island, aren't there?"
I must have guessed right because I clearly saw the terror on Ethan's face.
So the man I married in my previous life truly wanted me dead.
