Chapter 4

Alec's expression changed slightly.

Jade stepped forward.

She was wearing a silky spaghetti strap nightgown, her bare, milky white arms leaning against Alec's.

Hooking her finger on his shoulder, she said, "Honey, isn't this exactly what you wanted?"

Alec took less than three seconds to think.

Then his face suddenly changed.

He looked at me with some regret and said, "Faye, I didn't want to say this."

"I don't know if you've noticed, but after your 35th birthday, it's like you aged overnight."

"Your gray hairs are increasing, wrinkles have crept up on your face, and even your skin has started to yellow and roughen."

"To be honest, you used to take really good care of yourself. Even though you're eight years older than me, I never felt the difference."

"But no matter how well you maintain yourself, you've still gotten old."

"And I'm not even thirty yet."

"Thinking about spending the rest of my life with a woman old enough to be my mom, I just can't stomach it."

"But I thought, since we're married, I should take responsibility for you. After all, you're already 36, and after divorcing me, it's unlikely any man would want you. But since you brought up divorce first, let's just do it."

He finished speaking, letting out a sigh of relief. It felt as if a huge weight that had been pressing on his heart was suddenly lifted.

There wasn't a trace of sadness in his eyes.

Only relief remained.

He took Jade's hand without any hesitation and left the room.

I watched his retreating figure through half-closed eyes, lighting another cigarette.

Beside me, the cop in charge of the arrest suddenly spoke up: "Hey, don't take that man's words to heart."

"I think you've got quite a bit of class. He's just a pig who can't appreciate fine wine."

I turned and smiled at him: "Thank you."

To my surprise, he froze for a moment, then his ears turned red.

The divorce from Alec went through incredibly smoothly.

It was just the three-month cooling-off period that gave me a bit of a headache.

Alec, on the other hand, didn't seem to care much.

These past couple of days, he looked full of vigor.

A whole new set of trendy clothes, probably picked out with Jade's help.

The moment she saw me, Jade looked me up and down, her disdain obvious: "Alec, you've been hanging around old ladies too long. That's why you dress so frumpy."

"Come on, I'll take you to buy some new outfits. I guarantee you'll be the hottest chick on the block."

I only stopped Alec, giving him time to quickly grab his things.

After all, the house was under my name. Alec didn't say anything, but Jade pursed her lips and said, "Who cares about living there! You can move in with me for now."

They quickly left in a cab.

Half an hour later, sitting in the car, my phone buzzed with a text message.

It showed that one minute ago, Alec had used my Intimate Pay.

I pulled up the corner of my mouth in a quiet sneer.

Then, I casually turned off Intimate Pay and froze all the supplementary cards I had given Alec.

Within a few minutes, Alec's call came through.

He seemed to have found a secluded spot, and asked in a hushed voice:

"Faye, what do you mean by turning off Intimate Pay and freezing the cards?"

"You know I'm shopping for clothes right now. Are you deliberately trying to embarrass me?"
