Chapter 4, Burden: Part 23

As the illusory pillar buckles under the creature's renewed assault, Nina strains her remaining magical energy. She shifts her focus from maintaining the illusion, to twisting its form, transforming the shimmering light into something sharper, something deadlier. With a cry, she wills the light to solidify, to crystallize into a multitude of razor-sharp spikes. The shimmering pillar explodes outwards, the illusory light fracturing into a hail of crystalline shards that pierce the air. The creature roars in pain and fury as dozens of the crystalline spikes impale it, driving deep into its shadowy flesh.

It bucks and writhes, the green energy around it spattering and dissipating as the shards drain its power. The creature struggles violently, its form contorting in a desperate bid to free itself from the crystalline prison. For a moment, Nina catches her breath, a moment of hope blooming in her chest. Ronan, though still weak, watches with a mixture of awe and fear in his eyes. The creature shows off its terrifying strength. Despite the numerous wounds across its body, it continues to fight with a grim tenacity, the shadowy form pulsing with a remnant of the dark power that corrupted and controls it.

A low growl, filled with desperate rage, tears from its throat as it thrashes, its claws tearing at the spikes. The very air vibrates with the creature's power as it manages to dislodge some of the spikes impaling its body, managing to send them raining onto the floor of the cavern. The remaining spikes start to dim, their crystalline structure weakening. Nina can sense that her momentary advantage is fleeting. The creature, freed from the worst of the attack, has now focused its attention on the mage who disrupted its hunt and injured it greatly.

The shadowy form rises, its eyes glowing with malevolent green light, its form still pulsating with barely contained power. Ronan coughs, a rattling sound in the tense silence. The shadow creature shifts it gaze briefly to the injured lycan but returns its eyes back to Nina, watching for any other possible attack she sends. Nina can barely hear the rasping from Ronan as he sputters, "We need to get out of here." The creature, seeming understanding the words spoken launches an attack. Only this time, it is aimed at the young mage.
