Chapter 4, Burden: Part 24

Adrenaline soars through Nina's body as the creature charges her. As if by instinct, she focuses her remaining magical energy on casting a final spell. She no longer tries to maintain the weakening crystals, instead channeling her power through them, transforming them into very potent and effective conduits. She wills raw magic to take the form she desires. This form manifests as an electrical current that buzzes between her hands and, with a whispered incantation, she channels to current through the crystals still embedded in the shadow's body, jolting the creature with a searing shock.

The creature shrieks, a sound like grinding stone and tortured screams, as the electricity courses through its shadowy form. Its body convulses violently, the green energy flaring wildly before sputtering and dying. The crystalline spikes, now glowing with an eerie blue light, seem to burn brighter, supercharged by the raw magical energy coursing through them. The creature's movements become sluggish, its struggles growing weaker with each passing second. The air crackles with residual energy, a faint ozone scent filling the cavern.

For a moment, a terrifying silence descends upon the cavern. The creature stops struggling to stand upright and collapses, its shadowy form flickering and fading like a dying ember. The crystalline spikes, their purpose served, begin to crumble, dissolving into dust as the magical energy dissipates. The air clears, leaving only the scent of ozone and the echoing silence of the cavern. Roann, his breath ragged, leans against a nearby rock, his eyes wide with a mixture of relief and exhaustion. Rex whines softly, nudging Nina's hand with his wet nose.

The immediate danger is past, but a lingering unease remains. The cavern, previously filled with the oppressive presence of the creature, now feels strangely empty, yet ominous. A low hum emanates from the depths of the cavern, a subtle vibration that runs through the very stone beneath their feet. A faint, ethereal glow emanates from the far side of the cavern, beckoning them forward. Nina, exhaling a breath she hadn't realized she was holding runs over to Ronan's side and kneels down next to him.

Ronan points to it weakly. "I think... I think that's the source of the blight," he whispers, his voice strained but determined. He looks at the dust where the creature once stood. "We must hurry. The power of the blight is still out there. The longer we remain here, the more danger we will be in."
