A few days later, I received a call from the police.
Shortly after, another unfamiliar number rang. I answered.
"Scarlett, I'm waiting for you downstairs." Fintan's voice was filled with surprise and delight. He hadn't expected me to pick up, considering I'd been hanging up on his numerous calls from different numbers over the past few days.
I went downstairs and saw Fintan's car parked there. His face was brimming with smugness as he strode towards me.
"Scarlett, come home with me. I said I'd marry you, and if you're really that unsure, we can go get our marriage license right now."
"But don't pull this crap again in the future. It's because of you that Callie couldn't get her surgery in time. We owe her—"
Fintan's head jerked to the side from the force of the slap. He stood there stunned for a few seconds, then slowly turned back to face me, his eyes dark with anger.
I stared him down, enunciating each word clearly: "So who owes me for my missing kidney?"
