Still occupied in her thoughts, Alexia heard an announcement.

“It is tradition," a voice announced from the front of the hall admist the music in the background, "for the princes of Vizcaria to dance with the ladies in the ballroom tonight. Let the dancing begin!"

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd, followed by hopeful sighs as many of the women straightened their gowns and whispered silent prayers to be chosen by one of the princes. Excitement buzzed in the air, and Alexia found herself frowning slightly at the dramatic reactions.

She was too distracted to share in their excitement. Her gaze had once again drifted to the white-haired prince sitting among the five masked figures at the far end of the hall. There was something about the way he carried himself—the silent authority, the commanding presence—that made her chest tighten.
