I saw a figure rushing out of the fire escape as soon as I finished speaking.
Dashiell ran up with a flushed face, looking at me with disappointment in his eyes. He panted, catching his breath as he spoke haltingly, "Summer, did... did you really mean what you just said?"
"Yes." I looked directly into his eyes, enunciating each word, "I can't afford to mess with your Family of Langdon. Please go back to wherever you came from. I don't want to see any of you ever again."
"Well, well! You better remember what you've said today. Don't you dare cling to my son anymore!" Mrs. Langdon sprang to her feet, her nose in the air as she spoke haughtily, "And I absolutely forbid you from causing any trouble for my daughter-in-law. Otherwise, don't blame this old lady for being unkind to you..."
"Mom! Stop talking." Dashiell's words were tinged with anger as he cut her off reprovingly.
Just then, my friendly neighbor burst through the crowd.
