Callie pretended not to see my tears.
Once I had composed myself, he said, "Delia, come out at dawn. I have a surprise for you."
I wiped away the last of my tears and agreed.
That night, I switched out the milk Ashton had given me.
After he was sound asleep, I tiptoed out of the tent.
Callie had already set up the telescope for stargazing.
There was going to be a meteor shower tonight.
As the starlight streaked across the sky, instantly illuminating the darkness, I was awestruck by the vast spectacle before me. In that moment, all my troubles seemed to fade away.
"Callie, is this why you came?"
"I came to chase after the star I love."
"I stumbled once before and lost my chance. Now I want to try again."
The stars twinkled as he gripped my hand tightly.
The night wind howled, but his palm was warm.
"Delia, can you give me a chance?"
The next day, Callie and I chatted freely as we walked.
Ashton trailed behind, failing several times to join the conversation.
