Chapter 3

Moreover, when she took photos with my parents, her behavior wasn't close, and my parents' faces wore very formal smiles.

Although I don't know who she is, now I can be certain.

She is definitely not my parents' daughter.

Kellan let out a derisive laugh.

"Now you've given up, haven't you? I don't know where you get the nerve to question whether Melody is Ms. Thornton's daughter. Let me tell you, Melody is absolutely Ms. Thornton's daughter. You probably don't even know that I'm now working at Thornton Corporation."

"With my qualifications, I absolutely couldn't get into a big company like Thornton Corporation, but not only did I get in, I've been working there for less than a year and the general manager has already promoted me to team leader, breaking protocol."

"Not only do I have a million-dollar salary, but I'm also in charge of dozens of people. These are all things Melody has given me. Things that you, an old hag, could never provide in your entire life."

"And those gifts I brought home, they were all forced on me by the company's general manager. All of this is thanks to Melody. Without Melody, you wouldn't be able to eat such good things. You still dare to talk back to her? You really must have a death wish."Kellan finished speaking, then angrily grabbed my hair and slammed my head against the floor.

Meanwhile, Melody watched Kellan's actions with a sweet smile: "Why bother saying all that? It's what I should be doing."

When Kellan got tired of hitting me, he carelessly tossed me to the ground.

He didn't forget to give me one last kick.

My whole body ached as I trembled on the floor.

I suddenly realized the truth about all those snacks and crab dishes from my favorite brands at home.

I had thought Kellan cared for me, buying the brands I loved most.

But now I understood - all of it was from my family, given to him to bring back to me.

They even got him promoted with a raise. I knew Kellan's true capabilities and level.

This guy nearly failed to graduate college and couldn't even make a basic spreadsheet. He had no real skills or knowledge.

Yet because of him, I hadn't spoken a word to my family in years.

Thinking of this, I hesitated no longer.

With shaking hands, I took out my phone and sent my brother a message.

"Bro, I was wrong. Can you come get me and take me home?"

Within seconds of sending it, I got a reply.

"Wait there. I'm coming to bring you home."

My nose stung as I nearly burst into tears.

But I just switched to another screen on my phone, because I needed to call the police.Kellan hit me, and I couldn't let that slide.

I was determined to make him pay for his actions.

But before I could dial out, Melody caught a glimpse of my phone screen.

She shouted, "Babe, she's trying to call the cops!"

Kellan immediately lunged for my phone, but I managed to dodge him.

I started dialing while making a dash for the door.

Just as I reached the doorway, before I could open it,

I ran into my in-laws returning from their walk.

I tried to slip past them unnoticed and make a break for it.

But Kellan yelled from behind, "Stop her!"

In the end, I was a step too slow. My father-in-law reacted first, slamming the door shut.

My phone was then smashed by Kellan who had caught up to me.

He violently shoved my head against the door.

Then he slapped me hard across the face twice.

"Calling the cops, huh? You got a death wish or something? I'm still your husband, aren't I? You're trying to screw me over?"

Kellan's use of the word "husband" sparked Melody's jealousy.

Melody sidled up to Kellan, clinging to his arm.
