The days that followed their rain-soaked adventure were a blur of work for Lin Yue. She immersed herself in deadlines and drafts, trying to ignore the butterflies that fluttered every time she thought of Zhang Wei. But no matter how hard she tried, his words echoed in her mind: "With you, it's different."
On the other side of the city, Zhang Wei wasn't faring much better. Between meetings and strategy sessions for the app launch, his thoughts frequently drifted to Lin Yue—the way her laughter had filled the park, the quiet strength in her eyes, the way she seemed to understand him without him having to say a word.
It wasn't long before fate—or perhaps Zhang Wei's determination—brought them together again.
Lin Yue was curled up on her couch, a half-eaten bowl of ramen on the coffee table, when her phone rang. She glanced at the screen and saw Zhang Wei's name.
"Zhang Wei?" she answered, surprised.
"Hi," he said, his voice warm and familiar. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything."
"Just my thrilling dinner of instant noodles," she teased. "What's up?"
There was a brief pause before he said, "I was wondering if you'd like to join me for dinner tomorrow. Something better than ramen, I promise."
Lin Yue's heart skipped a beat. "Dinner? Like… a date?"
"Would that be so bad?" he asked, his tone light but with an undercurrent of sincerity.
She hesitated for only a moment before replying, "Alright, Mr. Zhang. You've got yourself a dinner date."
The next evening, Zhang Wei picked her up in his sleek black car. Lin Yue had chosen a simple yet elegant dress, her nerves hidden behind a calm exterior.
"Where are we going?" she asked as they drove through the city.
"It's a surprise," he said, a playful glint in his eyes.
The surprise turned out to be a cozy rooftop restaurant, its warm lighting and panoramic view of the city creating an intimate atmosphere.
"I didn't peg you for a romantic," Lin Yue teased as they were seated.
"There's a lot you don't know about me," he replied, his smile enigmatic.
The evening was a blend of laughter, meaningful conversations, and a growing connection that neither of them could deny. Zhang Wei shared stories of his childhood, his struggles to step out of his father's shadow, and his dreams for the future. Lin Yue opened up about her love for writing, her insecurities about her career, and her longing to find a purpose beyond deadlines.
As dessert was served, Zhang Wei leaned forward, his gaze locking with hers.
"Lin Yue," he began, his voice steady yet tinged with vulnerability, "I don't want to rush things, but I need to be honest. I haven't felt this way about anyone in a long time."
Her breath hitched, and she could feel her heart pounding. "Zhang Wei…"
"You don't have to say anything," he interrupted gently. "I just needed you to know."
For a moment, the world seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of them in their little bubble of honesty and emotion.
As they left the restaurant, the atmosphere was light yet charged with unspoken emotions. They were walking toward Zhang Wei's car when a voice called out.
"Zhang Wei?"
They turned to see a stunning woman approaching them. She was tall, with sharp features and an air of confidence that immediately commanded attention.
"Yuan Ling," Zhang Wei said, his tone guarded.
Lin Yue felt a twinge of discomfort as the woman's gaze flicked to her, assessing her in an instant.
"It's been a while," Yuan Ling said, her smile cold. "I didn't expect to see you here… on a date, no less."
Zhang Wei's jaw tightened. "This isn't the time, Ling."
"Oh, don't worry," she said, her eyes narrowing. "I just wanted to say hello. I'm sure we'll run into each other again soon."
With that, she turned and walked away, leaving an awkward silence in her wake.
"Who was that?" Lin Yue asked carefully.
Zhang Wei sighed. "An old… acquaintance. It's complicated."
Something in his tone told Lin Yue not to push further, but she couldn't shake the uneasy feeling that Yuan Ling's sudden appearance was a sign of trouble ahead.
The ride back to Lin Yue's apartment was quieter than usual. Zhang Wei seemed lost in thought, and Lin Yue didn't want to press him.
When they arrived, he walked her to her door.
"Thank you for tonight," she said, forcing a smile. "It was… unforgettable."
"I'm sorry about Yuan Ling," he said, his expression troubled. "She has a way of showing up at the worst times."
"It's okay," Lin Yue replied softly. "Everyone has a past."
He looked at her then, his gaze intense. "I don't want her—or anything else—to ruin this. Whatever this is between us."
Lin Yue's heart swelled at his words, but all she could manage was a nod.
"Goodnight, Lin Yue," he said, stepping back.
"Goodnight, Zhang Wei," she whispered as he turned and walked away.
