Lin Yue spent the next morning replaying the events of last night. The laughter, Zhang Wei's heartfelt confession, and the sudden, cold interruption by Yuan Ling—it all swirled in her mind like a storm. She couldn't deny her growing feelings for Zhang Wei, but Yuan Ling's appearance had left her with questions she wasn't sure she wanted to ask.
Meanwhile, Zhang Wei sat in his office, staring at his phone. He had wanted to call Lin Yue, to explain everything about Yuan Ling, but where would he even begin? His past with Yuan Ling was a tangled web of ambition, betrayal, and unresolved emotions, and he wasn't sure if Lin Yue was ready to hear it—or if he was ready to tell it.
Lin Yue decided she needed advice. She called Mei, who agreed to meet her at their favorite café.
"So," Mei said after taking a sip of her latte, "you're telling me Zhang Wei confessed his feelings, and then this mysterious ex—or whatever she is—shows up to stir the pot?"
"Pretty much," Lin Yue said, stirring her coffee absentmindedly. "She was beautiful, confident, and… intimidating. It felt like she was trying to make a statement."
Mei raised an eyebrow. "And how did Zhang Wei react?"
"He was polite but tense," Lin Yue replied. "He called her an 'acquaintance,' but it was obvious there's more to the story."
"Well, of course there is," Mei said. "Men like Zhang Wei don't get to where they are without a few skeletons in the closet. The question is, can you handle it?"
Lin Yue sighed. "I don't know. I like him, Mei. More than I want to admit. But I don't want to get caught up in something messy."
Mei reached across the table and squeezed her hand. "Then you need to talk to him. If he's serious about you, he'll be honest. And if he's not… well, you deserve better."
Zhang Wei's day only got more complicated when Yuan Ling called him.
"We need to talk," she said, her tone clipped.
"There's nothing to talk about, Ling," Zhang Wei replied, already regretting answering the call.
"Oh, but there is," she said. "You're seeing someone new. That changes everything."
"What happened between us is in the past," he said firmly. "It has nothing to do with Lin Yue."
"You think it's that simple?" Yuan Ling asked, her voice sharp. "You and I have history, Zhang Wei. And history doesn't just disappear."
Before he could respond, she hung up, leaving him with a gnawing sense of unease.
That evening, Zhang Wei showed up at Lin Yue's apartment with takeout from her favorite restaurant.
"I figured you might not feel like cooking," he said, holding up the bags.
Lin Yue smiled, though her nerves were bubbling beneath the surface. "Come in."
They ate in comfortable silence for a while, but it wasn't long before the tension in the air became palpable.
"Zhang Wei," Lin Yue began cautiously, "I need to ask you something."
He set down his chopsticks, his expression serious. "Go ahead."
"Who is Yuan Ling?" she asked, her voice steady despite the pounding of her heart.
Zhang Wei exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "She's… someone I used to be close to. We were in a relationship years ago. It ended badly."
"Badly how?" Lin Yue pressed.
"She was ambitious—too ambitious. She used people to get what she wanted, including me," he admitted, his gaze distant. "When I realized what she was doing, I ended things. But she didn't take it well."
Lin Yue absorbed his words, her mind racing. "And now?"
"Now she's just someone from my past," he said, his voice firm. "She doesn't matter, Lin Yue. You do."
His words sent a warm rush through her, but the doubts lingered. Could she trust him to keep the past where it belonged?
After dinner, they moved to the couch, the atmosphere lighter but still tinged with an underlying tension.
"Zhang Wei," Lin Yue said softly, "I appreciate your honesty. But if there's ever anything else I need to know… promise me you'll tell me."
He looked at her, his expression open and vulnerable. "I promise, Lin Yue. No more secrets."
She nodded, feeling a flicker of hope. Maybe, just maybe, they could make this work.
As Zhang Wei left that night, Lin Yue stood by the window, watching his car disappear into the distance. Her heart was full of conflicting emotions—hope, fear, and a budding certainty that she was falling for him.
Across the city, Zhang Wei drove home with a renewed sense of purpose. He didn't know what the future held, but he was determined to protect what was growing between him and Lin Yue.
But neither of them could see the storm that was brewing, a storm that would test their newfound connection in ways they couldn't yet imagine.
