Chapter 16: Breakthrough

DeSean leaned back in his office chair, his fingers steepled in thought as his eyes stared blankly at the notes sprawled across his desk. The case wasn't going to be easy, and the pressure was mounting. Ronnie Jacob's death was riddled with questions that demanded answers. There was something off about the way the night played out—the details Mercedes provided still felt incomplete. Then there was Ronnie's IED. What if it wasn’t just a personality quirk or misplaced anger? There had to be more.

DeSean reached for his phone, his jaw tightening. He quickly dialed the number for his private investigator.

"I need a full background check on Ronnie Jacob. Medical records, criminal history, school files—everything you can find. And fast," he instructed. After the call ended, he leaned back in his chair again, rubbing his temples.

A knock at the door interrupted his thoughts.

"Come in," he called, straightening in his seat.
