Chapter 21: Racing Against Time

DeSean couldn’t shake the frustration clawing at his chest as he sat in his office, replaying the encounter with Jaden over and over. The kid had been scared—really scared. And that only confirmed DeSean’s worst fear.

Jimmy had already gotten to him.

Gary sat across from him, watching as DeSean leaned back in his chair, eyes closed, fingers pressed against his temple. "So what now? We go knocking on every damn door in the city till we find the kid again?"

DeSean sighed. "We don’t have time for that. If we don’t find him before trial, Mercedes is done."

Gary frowned. "And if we do find him? What’s the plan? Kid's obviously terrified of something."

DeSean exhaled sharply. "We make him talk."

Gary smirked. "Yeah, because intimidating a traumatized kid is gonna work real well."

DeSean shot him a glare. "I didn’t say intimidate him. I said make him talk. There’s a difference."
