Chapter 7

As the trial date draws nearer, Lanaya's attempts to contact me have become increasingly frequent.

After I've repeatedly avoided her,

They've finally started to panic.

On the eve of the trial, Lanaya and Owen came knocking at my door.

Once again, the three of us stood face to face.

Owen snarled, "Donavan, you're a goddamn firefighter, for Christ's sake. You're supposed to serve the people."

"How can you have the heart to push Lanaya and me to the brink?"

"If you drive us to our deaths, can you live with that on your conscience?"

Before I could even open my mouth, they'd already slapped this massive accusation on me.

I couldn't help but laugh bitterly at the absurdity.

"You're right, I do serve the people, but you've got one thing wrong."

"What's that?"

"You two aren't people."

They're so self-righteous now.

Back when I used all my savings to buy that house, where was their concern about pushing me to the edge?

I'm not falling for Owen and Lanaya's bullshit.
