Anya awoke with a gasp, her body sprawled across the cold stone floor of the temple. The flickering blue light of the torches still illuminated the room, but an oppressive silence filled the air. Kaelan stood beside her, his face etched with worry.
"Are you alright?" he asked, helping her to her feet.
Anya nodded weakly, though her body trembled. "I... I saw something. I know what Rheskhar wants now."
Kaelan stared at her intently. "What do you mean? What did you see?"
Anya took a deep breath, trying to explain the vision she had just experienced. "Rheskhar is part of me, Kaelan. He is the darkness that was separated from me when the Mountain of Sambo chose me. That's why he knows all my weaknesses, and that's why he's always one step ahead."
Kaelan frowned, trying to piece it together. "Then how do we stop him? If he's part of you, is there a way to destroy him without harming you?"
Before Anya could respond, the sound of footsteps echoed through the temple corridor. Both of them tensed, preparing for whatever might emerge. From the shadows, a figure stepped forward—a man with silver hair and a long black cloak that swept the ground. His face was eerily familiar to Anya.
"Kaelan...," Anya whispered. "It's him. That's Rheskhar."
Rheskhar smiled faintly, his steps graceful and confident. "Ah, finally we meet, Anya. I've been looking forward to this moment for a long time."
Kaelan stepped protectively in front of Anya. "Stay away from her!"
Rheskhar let out a soft chuckle. "Relax, Kaelan. I didn't come here to fight. If I wanted to, I could have ended this long ago."
Anya took a step forward, even as her heart pounded. "What do you want from me?"
Rheskhar's face turned serious. "You already know the answer, Anya. I am the part of you that has been cast aside all these years. Without me, you'll never truly understand your potential. You are balance, and balance cannot exist without shadow."
Kaelan tightened his grip on his sword. "That's just manipulation! You only want to use her for your own gain!"
Rheskhar raised his hands in a gesture of peace. "Of course, you'd think that. But ask yourself, Anya—do you truly feel whole right now? Or have you always felt like something was missing?"
Anya hesitated. Rheskhar's words struck a chord deep within her. She had always felt incomplete, a void she couldn't explain.
"So, what are you offering?" she asked at last.
Rheskhar's smile returned, full of triumph. "I'm offering a bargain. Join me, and I'll help you harness your true power. Together, we can create a new world—a better one. A world without war, without suffering. A world where true balance can be achieved."
Kaelan stepped forward, furious. "That's nonsense! You don't care about balance! You only care about power!"
"And what's the difference?" Rheskhar replied calmly. "Power is the tool to create balance. You're too naive to see that, Kaelan."
Anya looked at Kaelan, then back at Rheskhar. "What if I refuse?"
Rheskhar's expression hardened. "Then I will take what is mine by force. And I don't care how much has to burn in the process."
Kaelan swung his sword, aiming to strike Rheskhar, but before the blade could reach him, Rheskhar disappeared into a flash of shadow. His voice lingered, echoing in the room.
"Think carefully, Anya. I'll give you time. But remember, every second you waste brings this world closer to destruction."
When the voice faded, Kaelan turned to Anya, his face a mix of anger and desperation. "You're not seriously considering his offer, are you?"
Anya lowered her gaze, unable to meet Kaelan's eyes. "I don't know, Kaelan. If he's right, maybe I need to."
"No!" Kaelan grabbed her shoulders, forcing her to look at him. "That's what he wants. He wants to divide you, to make you doubt yourself. You're stronger than that, Anya!"
Tears welled in her eyes. "But I don't know if I can do this alone, Kaelan. I don't even know who I am. If Rheskhar is a part of me, then what makes me different from him?"
Kaelan pulled her into a tight embrace. "You're different, Anya. You have a heart. You have a choice. Rheskhar is the shadow, but he doesn't define who you are. You do."
Anya felt a sliver of comfort in Kaelan's words, but deep inside, the doubt remained.
That night, while Kaelan slept, Anya sat by the small campfire they had built outside the temple. Her mind raced, struggling to process everything that had happened.
Suddenly, a soft voice spoke from the shadows behind her. "You know he's not entirely wrong, don't you?"
Anya spun around quickly, finding the same old woman she had seen in the mirror vision.
"You again," Anya said. "What are you doing here?"
The woman smiled faintly. "I came to warn you. The decision you make will determine the fate of this world. But I also came to remind you that true power doesn't come from who you were in the past, but from who you choose to become."
Anya stared at the woman, bewildered. "How do I know what's right? What am I supposed to do?"
The woman stepped closer, gently placing a hand on her shoulder. "Trust your heart, Anya. And remember, even the darkest shadow can cast light if you know how to use it."
Before Anya could ask more, the woman vanished, leaving her with more questions than answers.
Anya gazed up at the night sky, the stars glittering like clues she couldn't decipher. In the silence of the night, she realized the choice she would have to make would be the hardest of her life. And whatever she chose, there would be no turning back.
