The morning air around the temple felt cold and quiet. The sun had just risen, its light creeping slowly onto the temple's stone walls. Anya sat at the edge of a small cliff, gazing at the mist-covered valley below. Her mind replayed the conversation with Rheskhar and the mysterious old woman who had disappeared without a trace.
Kaelan approached from behind, carrying a small basket of fruit he had found in the forest. "You haven't slept?" he asked softly, placing the basket on the ground.
Anya shook her head, her eyes fixed on the mist below. "I feel like I'm walking into a dead end, Kaelan. No matter which way I turn, there's always a wall blocking me."
Kaelan sat beside her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Sometimes a dead end is just a test. You don't have to face everything alone, Anya. I'm here to help you."
Anya turned to him, her eyes full of guilt. "But you can't keep protecting me. I'm scared, Kaelan. If Rheskhar is right, if he really is a part of me, what does that mean for us? What does it mean for this world?"
Kaelan didn't answer immediately. He stared at the same valley, searching for answers within himself. After a moment, he said, "We're not defined by our shadows, Anya. We're defined by what we choose to do with them."
Before Anya could respond, a rumble came from within the temple. The stones trembled, and the ground around them shook. Kaelan immediately stood, drawing his sword from its sheath. "Stay here," he said sharply.
But Anya refused to stay behind. She followed Kaelan into the temple, fear and anxiety gripping her heart. Inside, the blue light of the torches began to dim, as if something was draining their energy.
They heard heavy footsteps, and from behind the massive central door emerged a giant creature made of stone. Its glowing red eyes stared directly at them.
"The temple's guardian," Kaelan whispered. "It shouldn't be active unless something has been violated."
The creature growled, its voice like the rumble of a collapsing mountain. "Who dares to trespass in this sacred temple?"
Kaelan stepped forward, raising his hand as a gesture of peace. "We're not enemies. We're only seeking answers."
The creature was unmoved. "Answers are only given to the worthy. If you wish to pass through this door, you must prove yourselves."
Before they could ask what it meant, the creature attacked. Kaelan reacted instantly, leaping to avoid a massive blow that nearly flattened the floor. Anya ran to the corner of the room, trying to find a way to help without getting in Kaelan's way.
The battle was fierce. Every strike from the stone creature shattered parts of the temple, creating debris that almost crushed them. Kaelan dodged skillfully, searching for the creature's weak spot.
But Anya noticed something unusual. The creature's red eyes seemed to pulse in rhythm with the glowing mark on her hand. She closed her eyes, trying to sense the connection.
"Wait!" Anya suddenly shouted, stopping Kaelan as he prepared to strike again.
"What are you doing?" Kaelan looked at her, confused.
"I think I know how to stop it," Anya replied. She stepped forward, raising her glowing hand. The creature paused, its eyes focusing on the light.
"I'm not here to destroy or steal," Anya said firmly. "I only seek the truth."
The creature bowed its head, its eyes shifting from red to blue. "You bear the mark of the guardian. I will not fight you any longer."
Anya let out a sigh of relief. She glanced at Kaelan, who still held his sword but began lowering it cautiously.
The stone creature knelt, allowing them access to the large door behind it. "You have proven yourself, child of Mount Sambo. Enter this sacred chamber and find what you seek."
The door opened on its own, revealing a long, dark hallway. Kaelan looked at Anya with hesitation. "Are you sure you want to continue?"
Anya nodded. "This is the only way to uncover the truth."
The hallway seemed endless, its walls adorned with ancient carvings glowing faintly. At its end, they found a large chamber filled with golden light. At the center of the room stood an altar, holding a small, glowing object—the circular artifact Anya had seen in her visions.
But before they could approach it, another voice filled the air.
"Welcome, Anya."
From the shadows behind the altar, the same old woman emerged. This time, she wasn't smiling. Her expression was filled with sadness and regret.
"Who are you really?" Anya asked.
The woman lowered her head before lifting it again. "I am the first guardian of Mount Sambo. And I am the reason all of this is happening."
Kaelan tensed, while Anya stared at the woman in disbelief. "What do you mean?"
The woman took a deep breath and explained. "Rheskhar is my creation. He was born from my decision to separate the darkness within myself, hoping I could become the perfect guardian. But I was wrong. That darkness became its own being, filled with anger and hatred."
Anya was silent, feeling the weight of the revelation pressing down on her shoulders. "So he isn't just a part of me? He's also a part of you?"
The woman nodded. "And because I failed to stop him, that burden now falls to you. But I believe you are stronger than I was. You have a heart I lacked."
Kaelan stepped forward, his face filled with anger. "You created all of this, and now you expect Anya to fix it? That's not fair!"
The woman gave a bitter smile. "Life is rarely fair, Kaelan. But this is the path that must be taken. Anya is our last hope."
Anya looked at the artifact on the altar, her emotions a whirlwind of doubt and determination. She knew that taking the artifact would bring her closer to the truth, but also to greater risks.
Before she could decide, the chamber began to shake. Dark shadows appeared on the walls, and a cold laugh filled the air.
"That's enough playing around," the voice said. "I won't let you take what's mine."
Rheskhar emerged, his red eyes glowing fiercely. With a single wave of his hand, he caused the hallway behind them to collapse, trapping them in the chamber.
Kaelan raised his sword, ready to fight. But Anya held his arm. "No, Kaelan. This is my fight."
Rheskhar smirked. "Finally, you're starting to understand, Anya. But the question is, are you strong enough to face the truth?"
The chamber transformed into a battlefield of light and shadow, energy clashing violently. Anya knew that the time had come to face her destiny, no matter the cost.
