The mansion was quiet in the late afternoon, the kind of quiet that seemed to stretch on forever in the sprawling rooms and endless hallways. Kikidori was lounging on the couch, one leg draped lazily over the armrest, his phone in hand. He scrolled mindlessly through an app, his face illuminated by the faint glow of the screen.
Ere'ana was nowhere to be seen, likely in her study or tending to whatever mischief she deemed necessary that day. Whiskers, however, was prowling around the room, her sharp eyes darting between pieces of furniture like a hunter on the prowl.
Kikidori glanced up briefly, smirking as the vampire cat leapt onto a nearby table. "Whiskers, you better not knock anything over," he warned, though his tone was more amused than serious.
The little cat paused, her ears twitching as she stared at him. Then, as if to mock his warning, she batted a paw at a vase sitting precariously near the edge of the table.
"Don't you dare," Kikidori said, his eyes narrowing as he set his phone down.
Whiskers tilted her head, her glowing eyes narrowing in return.
"Whiskers," Kikidori repeated, his voice taking on a warning tone. "I mean it."
But Whiskers, being the chaos-loving creature she was, decided to test her luck. With one swift motion, she swiped her paw at the vase, sending it tumbling off the table.
The shattering sound echoed through the room, pieces of ceramic scattering across the floor.
For a moment, there was silence as Kikidori stared at the mess. Then, much to his own surprise, he burst out laughing.
"Are you serious right now?" he managed between chuckles, leaning back against the couch. "You little shit!"
Whiskers let out a soft, innocent "meow," her tail swishing as if she hadn't just caused chaos.
Kikidori shook his head, still laughing as he stood up to inspect the damage. "You've got some nerve," he muttered, crouching down to pick up the larger shards.
It was then that Ere'ana appeared in the doorway, her arms crossed as she surveyed the scene. "What happened here?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
Kikidori pointed at Whiskers, who had jumped onto another table and was now grooming herself as if nothing had happened. "Your cat happened," he said, his voice still tinged with laughter.
Ere'ana's lips twitched as she tried to suppress a smile. "Whiskers, did you break the vase?"
Whiskers looked up at her, letting out another innocent "meow."
"That's not an answer," Ere'ana said, walking over to Kikidori and helping him clean up the mess.
"I'm telling you, she did it on purpose," Kikidori said, tossing a piece of ceramic into a nearby trash bin.
"She's a cat," Ere'ana replied with a shrug. "Of course she did it on purpose."
Kikidori chuckled, glancing at Whiskers. "You hear that? Even Ere'ana knows you're a little troublemaker."
Whiskers didn't respond, but the smug look on her face said it all.
Once the mess was cleaned up, Kikidori flopped back onto the couch, stretching out with a contented sigh. Ere'ana joined him, sitting at the opposite end with her legs tucked beneath her.
"So," she said, smirking at him, "you're not mad?"
"Mad? Nah," Kikidori replied, waving a hand. "It's just a vase. Besides, it was hilarious."
Ere'ana raised an eyebrow. "You're laughing now, but wait until she breaks something you actually care about."
Kikidori shrugged. "Fair point. But for now, it's fine."
The two of them sat in comfortable silence for a while, the quiet only broken by the occasional purring of Whiskers, who had curled up on the back of the couch.
As the evening wore on, Ere'ana glanced at Kikidori, her expression thoughtful. "You know," she said, "you're surprisingly patient with her."
"Whiskers?" Kikidori asked, raising an eyebrow.
Ere'ana nodded. "Most people would've been furious about the vase, but you just laughed it off."
Kikidori smirked, leaning his head back against the couch. "What can I say? She's entertaining. And besides, life's too short to get worked up over a cat."
Ere'ana chuckled softly, her eyes glinting with amusement. "Fair enough. But don't say I didn't warn you when she breaks something expensive."
"I'll deal with it when the time comes," Kikidori replied, his tone light.
As the night settled in, the three of them—Kikidori, Ere'ana, and their mischievous little vampire cat—enjoyed the calm that came after the chaos. For all the trouble Whiskers caused, she was undeniably part of their strange, unconventional family.
