"Darling, you need to eat more."
"You're carrying our sweetheart in your belly now, so you can't be like before, skipping meals to lose weight."
As he came closer, I caught a whiff of unfamiliar perfume on him.
I couldn't help but gag.
"Did you buy new cologne?"
A flicker of panic crossed Alec's eyes, and he nervously rubbed his nose.
"You know, there are a lot of young women at our company."
"I probably accidentally got some on me while working late last night."
"If you don't like it, I can ban all perfumes at the office from now on, how's that?"
"After all, you and our sweetheart are the most important people to me."
I silently endured his insincere words, not saying much.
After breakfast, Alec looked at me seriously.
"Melody, the company is having a celebration party later. Why don't you come with me?"
"I want everyone to envy me for having such a wonderful darling."
I didn't want to go at first, but then I thought, this might be the last party we attend together.
Might as well say goodbye to my past self for good.
In the past, Alec would bring me without fail to every occasion that required his presence.
He would tenderly hold my hand and introduce me to everyone.
"I want them to know that you are my woman," he would say.
As the CEO of the company, Alec was never short of admirers buzzing around him.
But he always turned them down.
"I'm sorry, I only love my wife," he would say.
At the cocktail party, just like before, Alec held my hand the entire time.
I spotted Vivienne in the crowd, wearing a white dress like me, standing out among the guests.
When she saw me, her eyes were filled with jealousy.
Some male employees from other companies were now gathering around Vivienne.
"I wonder if our Vivienne has a boyfriend?"
Vivienne held her glass, smiling sweetly.
"Me? Of course I don't have a boyfriend."
"Why? Are you interested in pursuing me?"
After saying this, Vivienne glanced meaningfully in our direction.
"Sister Melody, not everyone is as lucky as you to have such an excellent husband like Mr. Carlisle, don't you agree?"
I pretended not to know about the situation between the two of them and spoke coolly.
"Excellence is always relative."
"What you're desperately trying to attain might be exactly what I don't want."
With that said, I walked right past her.
Alec's expression became somewhat stiff and awkward as he closely followed my steps.
After a short while, Alec stopped.
"Darling, I'll go get you some room temperature water."
I nodded, and started wandering around by myself.
The flickering lights at the evening party, combined with the tension of the occasion, were giving me a headache.
I sent Alec a message, thinking about going outside for some fresh air.
But at the stairway, I heard the heavy breathing of a man and a woman.
Normally, I wouldn't be interested in this kind of thing.
I was about to leave when I realized the voices of the man and woman inside were so familiar.
"Alec, honey, when are you going to divorce that woman? I'm tired of living this secretive life!"
Alec was panting heavily.
