42. Betrayal—Only Once or Countless Times

For the first time, Samehada tasted the chakra of the Eight-Tails and was instantly intoxicated.

It seemed utterly mesmerized, beginning to wriggle slightly in Fuguki Suikazan's grasp.

"What's going on, Samehada?!"

Fuguki felt the weapon's restlessness and quickly created some distance between himself and Danzo.

But even so, Samehada continued to struggle violently, trying to break free from his hold.

"Damn it!"

In frustration, Fuguki kicked Samehada, attempting to bring it back under control.

However, this only provoked Samehada further. Its sharp fangs suddenly extended from the handle and easily pierced through Fuguki's hand.

Blood gushed out!

"You bastard!"

Feeling the excruciating pain, Fuguki immediately released his grip. He then furiously kicked Samehada, sending it flying.

Mid-air, Samehada opened its toothy mouth, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth. Twisting its spiked body, it dashed toward Danzo like an excited dog.

"Heh, so you've been tempted by the Eight-Tails' chakra, haven't you?"

Danzo showed no hesitation as he opened his palm and firmly caught the lunging Samehada.

The massive weapon squirmed in his hand like a loyal pet begging for attention.

"Samehada, you dare betray me?!"

Fuguki roared, his corpulent body trembling with rage.

Danzo glanced at him mockingly before turning his attention back to Samehada, which was now acting like a submissive puppy, seemingly pleading for more tailed-beast chakra.

With a sly grin, Danzo activated his ability, [Chakra Devour].

Samehada's writhing body instantly froze as Danzo began to voraciously drain its chakra through his palm!

It opened its mouth full of fangs, trying to bite Danzo, but the rapid depletion of its chakra left it weak and helpless. With minimal effort, Danzo subdued it with a firm step.

Once he had drained every last ounce of chakra from Samehada, Danzo tossed the now limp weapon onto the ground.

It was completely depleted. Not a single drop remained.

Samehada, which once looked fearsome, now lay on the ground, utterly dejected.

Drained dry. Not a drop left.

The once-mighty weapon lay there, consumed by despair.

Meanwhile, Fuguki stood dumbfounded, his mouth slightly open as he stared at the scene in disbelief.

What just happened?

His prized weapon had first betrayed him, choosing to submit to his enemy, only to be mercilessly discarded by that same enemy?

The thing he cherished so much was treated like trash by someone else?

What kind of twisted betrayal story was this?!

Fuguki felt as if his world was collapsing around him.

While Fuguki stood there in despair, Danzo couldn't help but feel exhilarated.

Not only had he reclaimed the tailed-beast chakra he had fed Samehada, but he had also absorbed all of the reserves the weapon originally held.

Now, he was brimming with energy and in peak condition.

As for Fuguki Suikazan? He was no longer a threat!

Danzo didn't even need to use complicated techniques. Simply using his flying ability and bombarding him with explosive tags would be enough to wear him down.

As for why Danzo rejected Samehada's loyalty? The reason was simple.

A sudden act of betrayal on the battlefield could mean two things:

1. The weapon had genuinely switched sides out of greed.

2. It was a ruse orchestrated by Fuguki to stage a surprise attack at a critical moment.

Danzo hadn't forgotten that in the original story, Samehada's first betrayal of Kisame was actually a ploy to allow him to hide inside its body and sneak past the A and B brothers to infiltrate Turtle Island.

Therefore, this scenario was very likely.

The second possibility was that Samehada had genuinely defected.

However, even a genuine defection was based on its desire for tailed-beast chakra.

The problem was that Danzo's supply of tailed-beast chakra had been mostly depleted during his encounter with Minato. The small amount he had left wasn't nearly enough to satisfy Samehada.

If Danzo couldn't provide sufficient chakra or if Samehada encountered a better source, wouldn't Danzo end up being betrayed next?

Danzo had no intention of keeping such a ticking time bomb by his side.

In the end, regardless of whether the defection was genuine or fake, the best option was to drain its chakra to replenish his own.

Now, with his energy fully restored, Danzo faced Fuguki Suikazan with a calm expression.

"Lord Fuguki Suikazan, are you sure you want to continue this fight?"

Seeing the drained and lifeless Samehada on the ground, along with the confident and reinvigorated Danzo in front of him, Fuguki's expression turned grim.

After a tense silence lasting over ten seconds, Fuguki finally gritted his teeth and said, "I can give you partial information about the ports and ships!"

Faced with his enemy's concession, Danzo didn't back down. Instead, he shook his head slowly.

"I must inform you, Lord Fuguki Suikazan, that you are in no position to negotiate."

Lifting the explosive sword planted in the ground, Danzo spoke in a calm yet overwhelmingly oppressive tone.

"Let me remind you, the sooner you make a decision, the better. Otherwise, when my junior—the so-called 'Yellow Flash'—arrives here, you will have no choice at all."

Under Danzo's relentless pressure, Fuguki was ultimately forced to choose between his life and his loyalty.

He chose his life.

Taking out a map from his pocket, he marked several locations on it and then tossed it toward Danzo.

Danzo didn't even bother to catch it, letting it fall to the ground beside him.

Only after this did he send a wood clone to pick it up and verify its contents.

By cross-referencing it with the intelligence Konoha had already gathered, Danzo quickly confirmed that the information was genuine.

As the leader of the Root division, all the intelligence gathered by Konoha's spies—including details about Kirigakure's troop deployments—was funneled to Danzo.

If Fuguki had tried to falsify the information, Danzo would have detected it instantly.

After providing the information, Fuguki turned to leave.

"Wait. There's one more thing."

Danzo's voice stopped Fuguki in his tracks.

Fuguki turned back like a furious beast, his bloodshot eyes locked onto Danzo.

"What more do you want, Shimura Danzo?!"

Unbothered by his fury, Danzo smiled faintly.

Once someone takes a single step back, they'll inevitably take ten more, a hundred more, until they fall into the abyss.

Since Fuguki had already chosen to betray his side, it was impossible for him to fight to the death now.

"It's nothing serious. I just need you to leave some chakra on this map, Lord Fuguki Suikazan."

Danzo maintained a gentle smile on his face.

To Fuguki, however, that smile looked like the grin of a devil.

"You're trying to hold leverage over me!"

Fuguki glared furiously at Danzo.

"Otherwise, how can I be sure you haven't given us false information?"

Danzo's smile gradually faded as he lifted the sword again.

"Of course, Lord Fuguki Suikazan, you can refuse. But the consequences of that..."

Repeatedly threatened, Fuguki was so enraged that he nearly broke his own teeth from clenching them too hard.

But in the end, he obediently left his chakra on the map, which Danzo then sealed.

As Danzo had said, retreating happens only once, and then countless times after that.

Betrayal works the same way.
