Chapter Six

Takahiro

"Let's go to town." Truth announced suddenly over breakfast, his voice cutting through the quiet morning like a blade.

I blinked at him, caught off guard. "Huh?"

Kenji, unfazed, simply shrugged. "Sure."

Yushiro barely reacted, calmly continuing his meal as if Truth hadn't spoken at all.

I frowned. "Wait. Why?"

Truth leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms. "Simple. You guys have been working hard. Consider this a reward." He smirked. "As your seniors, we'll be treating you since you haven't started earning a salary yet. We leave in two hours."

With that, he stood and walked off, leaving me still processing his words. Then, something occurred to me.

"Hold on... how many towns do we even know?"

Yushiro finally spoke, his voice smooth and matter-of-fact. "I think we've seen three near the villages we patrol. But in Division 4's territory? There are about six."

Across the table, Kenji tilted his bowl, downing the rest of his porridge like it was water. He smacked the empty bowl on the table with a satisfied sigh. "Ahh!" He stretched his arms before flashing a grin. "Let's go to the town."

I stared at him, exasperated. "You mean a town?"

Yushiro, for once, cracked a small smile—half amused, half exasperated. "…Sure," I muttered, deciding not to fight it.

Kenji leaned back, his expression thoughtful. "You know, ever since we started coming here, we haven't been paid yet."

Oh. That's right. We'd been at this for months now, and none of us had received a single coin. Was it because we were still in training?

I turned to Yushiro, and to my annoyance, he was smirking at me like he already knew what I was thinking. I glared at him. He simply looked away, smug as ever.

Kenji, unconcerned, tilted his head at Yushiro. "Well? Why haven't we been paid?"

Yushiro sighed, as if the answer was obvious. "Because we're still trainees. The Division covers our needs—shelter, food, equipment. Until we pass the final trials and become full-fledged Division Knights, we won't see a single coin."

Kenji nodded in understanding. "I see… what else do you know?"

Yushiro looked up, meeting Kenji's gaze.

Silence.

The air between them grew tense, their eyes locking in an unspoken challenge. This was something they did from time to time—a wordless battle of wills. I felt a cold sweat creeping down my back.

Then Yushiro spoke, his voice dropping to an icy tone. "Dear older brother. Are you ordering me?"

Kenji's expression sharpened, his gaze just as intense. "No. I'm asking what else you know. There's a difference."

Yushiro's eyes narrowed. "It doesn't sound like a question."

Kenji's stare darkened into a glare.

I swallowed hard.

Yeah. This trip to town was going to be interesting.
