The following days settled into a mundane rhythm. We flew dragons on the first day of the week and handled missions from the board—though "missions" often felt more like chores. Tasks ranged from helping villagers with farm work to delivering goods between towns and training in nearby fields.
I overheard Truth talking about unusual movements near the border, and Taka, perhaps sensing the tension, started handling more housework. Everyone appreciated his cooking, and it was good to see him feeling more at home.
Still, our seniors seemed worried. A month into our time as Division Knights, I found myself resting on the ground after another grueling training session with the Black Boar. Piggy, as I called him, sat nearby, snorting quietly.
"Still there, Piggy?" I called out.
A snort answered me.
We'd spar until exhaustion, then rest together. I often talked to him, though I doubted he understood. Or did he? He was leaving now. Maybe I should too.
The days were peaceful. Yushiro kept telling us to relax and be patient with our progress. But I trained in my free time anyway.
Back at the base, our seniors took on most of the work, leaving us oddly free. I trained with Piggy, Taka trained alone, and Yushiro vanished as always. Where did he go in the Outskirts so often?
When I returned, Yushiro was at the table, reading. He greeted me with a familiar grin, and we chatted until Taka arrived. As usual, they bickered, and as usual, Yushiro won. We had lunch, trained, and Yushiro won "King of the Field" again. After dinner, we went to bed.
That night, I woke to a tapping sound on the window. Yushiro opened it, letting a small bird fly in to perch on his finger. It chirped urgently, and Yushiro's expression turned serious as he handed the bird to me. The moment it landed on my shoulder, a telepathic message echoed in my mind:
"To all nearby Knights near Marine Village, this is an urgent mission. The village is under attack! Send help immediately!"
The bird vanished.
I bolted upright. "Get ready! We need to move now!"
Yushiro woke Taka, and after a quick explanation, we donned our Division Knight uniforms, grabbed our weapons, and left the base.
An idea struck me. Leading my brothers to the Emerald Forest under the moonlit sky, I whistled. Moments later, Piggy charged toward me, snorting as he rubbed against me.
"Hey buddy, I need your help. Can you take us somewhere?" I asked softly.
Piggy snorted in agreement and vanished into the forest. My brothers stared at me.
"What?" I asked.
Yushiro's expression was unreadable, and Taka sighed. "Nothing," he said.
Piggy returned with two smaller boars.
"Let's go," I ordered.
We mounted the boars and sped through the forest. Piggy led the charge, smashing through the underbrush. Time was against us.
I only hoped we'd make it in time.
