CHAPTER 43

Alexis struggled to breathe under his intense scrutiny, legs taking her backward.

His scent filled the air, but it was unpleasant, sharp enough to sting, almost like he was incredibly mad at her.

Long seconds passed in pure silence, her brain never able to comprehend the strange tension between them.

"Answer me, Alexis," he repeated, voice filled with accusations. "Why would you lie for him? Why do you care whether I killed him or not?"

Silence stretched, heavy, and oppressive. She took another step, but this time around, the back of her knee hit the bed and she ended up falling, grabbing the man along with her, her back meeting the bed.

Keelion fell on top of her, but he was quick enough to hold his weight off her, hands on either side of her head.

"I didn't want him to get fired because of me."

He inhaled deeply. "You knew what I would do."
