Gunfire erupted in the streets, echoing through the alleyways like rolling thunder. Alex's pulse pounded in his ears as he sprinted through the dark, Maya at his side. Smoke hung thick in the air, the stench of burning rubber and gunpowder making it harder to breathe. But none of that mattered right now.
Ellie was missing.
The ambush at the motel had forced them to flee, but somewhere in the chaos, they lost her. One moment, she was right behind them, and the next—gone.
Alex's grip tightened around his gun as he turned the corner, nearly skidding on the wet pavement. "She has to be close!" he shouted over the noise.
Maya was already scanning their surroundings, her breathing sharp and controlled. "If they took her, they won't be far. They need her alive."
That was the only hope they had left.
A metallic clatter came from a nearby warehouse, followed by muffled voices. Alex and Maya exchanged a glance. No hesitation. They moved.
Alex reached the rusted side door first and pressed himself against the wall. Maya did the same, knife in hand. A quick nod between them, and Alex pushed the door open just enough to slip inside.
The interior was dark except for the harsh glow of a single hanging lightbulb. Crates and old machinery littered the space, but what caught Alex's attention was the group of men near the centre. Three of them, heavily armed. And in the middle—
Ellie.
She was bound to a chair, her dark hair dishevelled, blood trickling from her temple. But her eyes burned with defiance. She was still fighting.
One of the men knelt beside her, gripping her chin roughly. "You're worth more alive, sweetheart, but don't test my patience."
Alex didn't think. He moved.
The first shot took the man in the chest before he could react. The second enemy spun around, but Maya was already on him, her knife flashing in the dim light. A choked gasp, and he went down.
The third man fumbled for his gun—too slow. Alex fired. A single bullet to the head, and it was over.
Silence fell over the warehouse, the acrid scent of gunpowder hanging in the air.
Ellie let out a shaky breath, her body tense. "Took you long enough."
Alex rushed forward, cutting the ropes binding her hands. "You alright?"
Ellie flexed her fingers, wincing. "I'll live. But we need to go. Now."
Maya was already moving, checking the bodies for anything useful. She grabbed a fresh magazine and slid it into her pistol. "We won't have long before more show up."
Alex helped Ellie to her feet. "Then let's disappear."
And with that, they vanished into the night, leaving only bodies behind.
