Chapter 11: Hunted

The city swallowed them whole.

Alex, Maya, and Ellie moved fast, sticking to the backstreets, avoiding the main roads where they knew patrols would be watching. The rain had started again, masking their footsteps as they slipped through the alleyways. The gunfight at the warehouse had set off alarms—sirens howled in the distance, and the faint glow of flashing red and blue lights cut through the night.

"They'll be sweeping the whole damn area soon," Maya muttered, checking the magazine in her pistol. "We need to find cover."

Ellie wiped blood from the side of her face, her breathing still unsteady from the ordeal. "And we need a plan," she added, voice tight. "They weren't just after me. They wanted us all dead."

Alex scanned the street ahead. They couldn't stay exposed like this. The city belonged to their enemies now. Every camera, every street corner, every informant could be a threat.

"Subway tunnels," he said. "Closest way out without being seen."

Maya nodded, already moving. "Then let's go before they cut off our exits."

Ellie hesitated, then followed.

The entrance to the subway was chained shut, but that didn't stop them. Maya pried open a maintenance door, and they slipped inside, vanishing into the underground tunnels.

The stale air smelled of damp concrete and rusted metal. Dim emergency lights flickered, casting eerie shadows on the graffiti-covered walls. The place had been abandoned for years—an old, unfinished line that never saw public use.

"We should be safe here for a while," Alex said, scanning the space for any threats.

Ellie leaned against the wall, exhaling sharply. "Safe?" she scoffed. "We just killed three of their guys and left their bodies in a warehouse. They'll tear the city apart looking for us."

"They'll find bodies," Maya corrected. "Not us."

Alex knelt, checking the ammo left in his gun. "Doesn't matter. We need to figure out who sold us out." His jaw tightened. "We walked into that motel thinking we were safe. Someone gave up our location."

Silence.

Ellie's gaze flickered to Maya.

Maya didn't flinch. "You think it was me?"

Alex met her eyes. "I don't want to think that."

She shook her head, anger flashing across her face. "Then don't. I bled just as much as you to get out of that mess."

Ellie rubbed her temples, exhausted. "Look, we can argue later. Right now, we need weapons, supplies, and a way to disappear before this city turns into a war zone."

Alex exhaled sharply. "I know someone who can help."

Maya frowned. "You sure we can trust them?"

"No." He stood up, holstering his gun. "But we don't have a choice."

Ellie and Maya exchanged a glance before nodding.

They weren't just running anymore. They were hunting.

And this time, they'd make damn sure they weren't the ones being played.
