Chapter 20: Nowhere is Safe

The drone sped through the city skyline, weaving between buildings as Alex gripped the controls with white-knuckled focus. The weight of what had just happened was still settling in, but there was no time to process it. Black Sun had found them. And now, they wouldn't stop until all three of them were dead.

Maya leaned over the side, her eyes scanning the streets below. "I don't see any tail, but that doesn't mean they're not tracking us."

Ellie, sitting beside her, was reloading her pistol, her expression unreadable. "We need to get off the grid. For real this time."

Alex tightened his grip on the controls. "I know a place."

Maya raised an eyebrow. "You sure? Because I'm not in the mood for another ambush."

Alex exhaled. "Trust me."

The drone descended toward a dimly lit alley, landing smoothly on a rooftop. They hopped off quickly, moving with practiced efficiency. Every second they stayed in the open was a risk.

Alex led them down a metal fire escape, their boots barely making a sound against the cold steel. The alley below was empty except for a few flickering streetlights and a rusted-out dumpster.

Maya glanced around. "This doesn't scream 'safehouse' to me."

Alex ignored her, moving toward a seemingly abandoned building. He tapped a code into a hidden keypad beside the door, and with a low mechanical click, it slid open.

"Inside. Now."

Ellie and Maya didn't hesitate.

The Safehouse

The door shut behind them, sealing off the outside world. The safehouse was small—barely more than a concrete bunker with a few essentials. No windows. No technology. No outside connection.

Ellie dropped onto the worn-out couch, rubbing her temples. "So, what's the plan? Because right now, we're officially dead to the world."

Alex set the stolen drive on the table. "We figure out what's on this. It's the only leverage we have."

Maya cracked her knuckles. "I'll start digging." She pulled out her laptop and got to work.

Ellie exhaled. "You think this thing is really worth dying over?"

Alex met her gaze. That was the million-dollar question.

Before he could answer, Maya cursed under her breath. "Oh, we are so screwed."

Alex and Ellie moved closer, looking at the screen.

The drive wasn't just a list.

It was a kill order.

Hundreds of names. Government officials. Journalists. CEOs. Some already dead. Some still alive.

And at the very bottom—

Their names.

Ellie's face went pale. "They had us marked before we even knew who they were."

Maya stared at the screen. "No wonder Bishop told us to run."

Alex clenched his fists. "We're not running."

Ellie sighed. "Of course we're not."

Maya smirked. "Alright, boss. What's the next move?"

Alex's eyes darkened. If Black Sun wanted them dead, they were going to have to earn it.

"We go hunting."
