As the elevator ascended, the low hum of the machinery seemed to mirror the buzz of thoughts in Carmen’s mind. She had agreed to this marriage for practical reasons, to help Romero, to save her brother and secure her future. But now, standing in the midst of this corporate environment with little or no knowledge, it all felt surreal; like she was stepping into a world that wasn’t hers.
The elevator door slid open with a soft chime. Pablo gestured for her to step out first. They walked in the sleek corridor leading to Romero’s office. When Pablo reached the door, he opened it for Carmen.
“I’ll leave you to continue from where you stopped with the documents yesterday. Let me know whenever you need my attention,” Pablo said.
Carmen nodded. “Alright. Thank you.”
