Chapter 60 The Warlord's Trial (Floor 46, Battlefield Gates)

Elias took a slow breath, his muscles burning from the force of Varian's attacks. He had clashed with countless enemies before, but this warlord was something else. Every strike carried the weight of centuries of battle, and if Elias continued relying on pure strength, he would be overwhelmed.

I need to fight smarter.

Varian raised his greatsword again, golden energy crackling along its edges. "Still standing? Good. War does not wait for the weak."

Elias shifted his stance, his eyes gleaming. He could feel his body recovering slightly-his Rapid Regeneration working, but not fast enough. He had to end this soon.

[SYSTEM ALERT: SKILL ACTIVATED -PHANTOM STEP]

Elias suddenly flickered, his body becoming translucent as he phased into the ethereal plane. Varian's sword sliced right through him, hitting nothing but air.

The warlord's golden eyes flickered with recognition. "Hmph. Trickery?"

Elias didn't answer. Instead, he materialized behind Varian in an instant-

[SKILL ACTIVATED - DEATH'S TOUCH]

Dark energy crackled along his blade as he swung. The moment his sword connected with Varian's armor, a black wave of necrotic power surged through the warlord's body.

For the first time, Varian staggered. His armor darkened, the edges corroding slightly from the necrotic energy. His grip tightened around his sword, and he turned to face Elias.

"Ah... Cursed power."

But Elias was already moving.

[SKILL ACTIVATED - NIGHTMARISH REALM]

A dark mist spread across the battlefield, swallowing both Elias and Varian.

The warlord's stance shifted as he stepped forward, his golden aura flaring as he tried to shake off the illusion. But Elias knew no one could escape their own fears so easily.

"You think shadows will consume me?" Varian's voice was steady, but Elias caught the slight hesitation in his movement. It was working.

Elias wasted no time. He pushed forward, his sword glowing with Elemental Fury, crackling with both fire and lightning.

He lunged.

Varian reacted too late. The enchanted strike collided with his chestplate, sending out a shockwave of raw power. Cracks splintered across his golden armor as he stumbled back, his breathing heavier.

For the first time, the warlord smiled.

"Good."

Then, his aura exploded outward, shattering the illusion.

Elias barely had time to react before Varian's greatsword smashed into him, sending him crashing into the ground. Dust and debris filled the air as he coughed, struggling to rise.

Varian stood tall, his armor still glowing faintly despite the damage.

"You understand battle," the warlord said. "You fight with more than just power. That is why I acknowledge you."

Elias exhaled sharply, forcing himself to his feet.

What does that mean?

Then, suddenly-

The fortress gates behind Varian groaned.

Elias' eyes widened. The divine seal on the gates was breaking.

[SYSTEM ALERT: FLOOR 46 GATE UNLOCKED.] [CHALLENGER ELIAS VAELTHORNE - VICTORY CONDITION ACHIEVED.]

Varian stepped back, his sword resting against his shoulder. His golden eyes met Elias', and there was something almost... approving in his gaze.

"You are worthy of stepping forward," Varian said. "May your war never end until you find your truth."

With those final words, his body faded into golden embers, dissolving into the battlefield.

The fortress gates creaked open, revealing the path to the next floor.

Elias let out a slow breath.

He had won.
