Chapter 2

I was suddenly kicked to the ground, intense pain immediately spreading from my abdomen.

Perhaps hearing the commotion inside, loud knocking resumed at the door.

Cold sweat broke out as I writhed in pain. Edgar impatiently spoke beside me, "You bitch, still trying to lie your way out of this? I'll give you one day. I want to see the signed divorce papers tomorrow."

With that, Edgar viciously stomped on my calf, still unsatisfied, before opening the door and leaving.

As my mother-in-law was leaving, she looked contemptuously at my hands clutching my stomach and said, "Useless thing. Can't even have a baby after three years. Worthless!"

After they left, Zane, who had been knocking outside, immediately rushed in to help me up.

But the moment he moved to lift me, I felt a warm flow beneath me.

I closed my eyes in agony, using my hand to stop his motion.

"I'm taking you to the hospital, Nolan. We can't wait any longer." Zane was sweating profusely with worry, trying again to lift me.

The instant my body left the ground, I felt Zane's movement suddenly freeze.

I knew that at that moment, a large pool of my blood was spreading across the pristine white tiles.

The hospital test results came back. I was pregnant.Fortunately, Edgar's kick didn't immediately take the baby's life.

But I couldn't find any joy in that fact. This child's arrival was ill-timed.

Edgar and my mother-in-law are now convinced that I've been unfaithful. If I tell them I'm pregnant, they'll undoubtedly question whether the baby is Edgar's.

My first priority is to prove my innocence.

"Zane, please keep this a secret for me. It's not the right time for this child."

Besides being my husband's best friend, Zane is also the boyfriend of my close friend of ten years.

"Vivienne probably doesn't know yet, but with Edgar's temper, he's sure to tell her."

Zane quickly replied, "Nolan, trust me, I really don't know what happened. I woke up there just like you did."

At this point, Zane's explanation doesn't matter. In Edgar and my mother-in-law's eyes, we're just a pair of cheating dogs. Only concrete evidence will suffice.

I didn't respond to Zane's words. I needed time to sort out the jumbled thoughts in my head.

After sending Zane away, I found it impossible to rest easy on the hospital bed, so I decided to take a cab home.I need to go back to that bedroom, back to the place where I last had memories from last night.

I remember it clearly, Edgar had prepared an elaborate candlelit dinner and brought out the red wine he had treasured for years but never dared to touch.
