Caleb's POV
After Luca stormed out, I knew I didn't have to follow him but I wanted to get the hell out of there.
Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with Sky, actually I enjoyed listening to her talk but the learning!
For the love of all that's good and pure, I have no idea how I ended up doing economics.
It's not like I cared about studies in highschool. I actually managed to get here because of the hockey scholarship. And if I am benched means I am not playing and if I am not playing them my scholarship will be revoked and that leaves me with absolutely nothing to fall back on.
"What the hell is wrong with you? Why would you hit your brother?" I ask Luca when I catch up to him under one of the many trees in school.
"I didn't mean to. Seeing him holding Amelia knowing I couldn't just made something in me snap,"
"But it wasn't his fault that drove Amelia away, it was yours,"
"I know,"
We sat in silence, watching the students around school move around without a care of life, while ours were crushing around us.
"I thought you were getting tutored?"
"Yeah… just had to get out of there,"
"Caleb, you gotta focus. Only one more semester to go and you get to graduate and focus on hockey,"
"Have you decided if you want to play hockey for the minor league?"
"Not sure yet. But I don't think so, I will be busy when I go to law school," he laid to the ground.
"Okay," I lay beside him.
Being rich really had its perks, his father had used his connections to get him into the minor leagues but he wasn't even sure he wanted to play, while here I was struggling to get the scouts to notice me to get drafted but nothing. I was jealous.
"I don't love Amelia," Luca says, bringing me from thoughts.
"What?"
"No like I love her but I am not in love her like I used to be when we first met,"
"Then why do you keep dragging her with you?"
"I don't know, maybe because my parents love her and finally paid me attention when she is around and not just focused on Mark," he is silent for a while, "I need to be alone. Talk later," he adds, getting up and walking away.
I remain there watching the sun set.
*****
It's hours later when I stroll back to the house. I find Amelia in the living room about to leave.
"Where have you been?" Amelia asks.
"With Luca,"
"Sky is pretty pissed,"
"I know, I will talk to her. Have you talked to Luca?"
"No and I don't want to. Mark went out with him so that I can have time to pack up my stuff,"
"Am sorry,"
"It's not your fault, Caleb. I will see you around," she kisses my cheeks before leaving the house.
"Oh, Luca, you really fuckes up this time," I say to myself heading up to my room, that I am thankful I don't have to share like most of the team.
The room is dark when I enter and I opt to leave it that way. I strip off my shirt and am about to do the same to my trousers when the lights come on.
Sky is seated on my bed looking sexy as hell in winx club pajama trousers and a cropped hoodie.
"I'm sorry for leaving in the middle of our session, we can pick it up tomorrow," I tell her.
She remains on her spot, her face blank as she watches me making me like a prey in front of a predator ready to strike. It turns me on a bit even, but I remain rooted on my spot, quiet.
"You didn't have to follow after your friend but you still went. You could have come back after confirming he was fine but you didn't, which makes me think you didn't actually want to study," she pauses.
I want to say something but there is nothing I can say, she is right, I could have but I didn't.
"If you didn't want to study, then what are we doing here? Wasting each other's time? I get it you feel no need to study because your career is in hockey but don't waste other people's time because you just want to cruise over in life," she gets off my bed and comes to a standstill in front of me.
On other occasions she would have been blushing and barely able to hold eye contact but now she looks at me unblinkingly.
"I know you have it in you not only to focus but also pass economics and not with mediocre grades, you just have to care enough about it. Here are short notes on macroeconomics," she drops the book on the bed and leaves the room.
I continue standing there listening to her fading footsteps as they transverse the house heading for the door. The slam of the door has me sagging ruefully.
******
The week has finally come to a close and we are playing the raptors tonight.
Thanks to Sky's notes I passed the make-up exam and actually understood what I was writing, not just going through the motions to get out of there.
And not only that, the coach had received word from a minor league scout that if today's game goes well, I will be drafted for the season. I was so very elated to hear the news that I wanted to immediately tell the person responsible for me to play tonight.
But I didn't have her phone number and neither Mark nor Amelia are willing to give it, and going over to the FSCH has proved to be useless as she is never there.
I wonder how long she is going to continue giving me the silent treatment.
We are on the ice, zero-zero with the Raptors, the arena is packed considering yesterday evening the school hosted a football game, but I managed to spot Sky sitting next to Amelia among the crowd.
I am so distracted watching her that I don't notice the left wing of the raptors coming for me. He knocks me down. Despite having a good week, Sky's words wouldn't leave my head putting me on edge with everything And I have been spoiling for a fight and it just delivered itself on a silver platter.
I get up and throw a punch to his guts.
