Daniel wiped the sweat from his brow as he stepped off the pitch. The match against Vilanova had been brutal, but CF Igualada had managed a hard-fought draw. He could still hear the cheers and groans from the stands as he walked toward the locker room, his muscles aching from the relentless pace of the game.
"Buen partido, amigo!" Miguel patted Daniel's back as they walked inside. Daniel only caught the word "partido"—match—but the enthusiasm in Miguel's voice told him it was a compliment. He gave him a tired thumbs-up.
He had to admit, he was improving. At first, his time-perception ability had been a nightmare, making every movement feel exaggerated, every decision sluggish. Now, he had learned to dial it back. It wasn't perfect, but at least he wasn't struggling as much as before.
As he peeled off his jersey, he caught sight of Sofia leaning against the stadium railing, waiting for him. His heart skipped. He hadn't had much time to spend with her since the tournament began, but she was always there, always watching.
"Hey," she said as he approached. "You were incredible."
Daniel chuckled. "We still didn't win."
She shrugged. "Doesn't matter. You played well."
He smiled, but before he could respond, he noticed something strange. A man in a dark blue jacket stood by the entrance, watching him. The same man who had been near the field in the last match. Daniel's stomach tightened. He had thought he was free of being hunted, but something didn't feel right.
"Sofia," he said quietly, "do you see that guy?"
She followed his gaze. "Yeah. He looks familiar. I think I saw him near your school, too."
Daniel's pulse quickened. He had defeated those who were after him before, but was this someone new? He had no idea why people were so interested in him, but every time he thought he was safe, another shadow seemed to creep into his life.
"Daniel!" Coach Ramón's voice cut through his thoughts. "Inside, now! We need to talk about the next match."
Daniel hesitated, glancing once more at the man, who was now talking to someone on a phone. Then he turned back to Sofia. "I need to go."
She frowned. "Be careful."
Daniel nodded and jogged inside. Whatever was happening, he had a bad feeling that his troubles were far from over.
