A loud cry was heard in a dark room with doctors and nurses. Some nurses were seen leaving the room and coming in again, not giving chance for the people outside to speak nor utter a word.
Yang LianLu could feel her lower lip bleeding she has been biting more to gave herself a glimpse of hope that everything would be alright. She has endured. Really to the point that she wanted to give up on everything that was around her.
Even the little lights that brought light to the room, was more, for some reason blinding and dim at the same time. She cried.
She was sure she could have endured. That was when her baby was trying to pop out of her womb. After was seems like eternity, the cry of a baby was heard.
"Finally it's out" the doctor in charge of the child birth said and scooped the child that was almost falling to the ground.
"It's a boy!!" Shouted the nurses in charge. There was joy in their faces that they seem to forget that a lady has been there.
One of the nurses gently carried the baby in hers .
Another cry was heard.
Another child but this time, LianLu never found it difficult. To be honest, the other was quite cooperative than the latter. It's head popped out without letting the mother suffer much pain. The doctor again carried the baby, this time, didn't hand the baby over to the other nurses. The nurse who was carrying the first, came and stood beside the doctor looking at them as though they were the ones who birthed the child.
LianLu was able to catch her breath before noticing something,
The baby, who came later seem to angrily glare at the first, pointing at him with his small white fingers before shouting in tears.
"Wow!!! Are you angry at your elder brother for making mommy cry, huh?" The doctor asked while with gentle strokes patted the baby. The first seem to have stopped crying only looking at the almost dim environment.
"Can I carry my babies?" LianLu's voice was heard, though a little faint.
Gently, her babies was given to her. She smiled while looking at them.
"Are they identical?" She asked not noticing the difference in any of them.
"We aren't sure. But it seems like the case" the doctor responded, before looking at the nurses. They seem to understand, cause one of them said,
"Ma'am, I think you need to rest. We will take it from here"
When she was sure that she was satisfied with what she saw, she gave her babies to the nurses to take care of them. Of course, for a woman to undergo such a thing, she really needs rest, just as she saw the nurses leaving the room, fatigue crowded in her pitch black eyes. Like a gradual process, she fell asleep unaware of where she was being taken to.
___
Outside at the waiting room, three people were seen. One too old to walk around, but with the look in her eyes, she was equally worried. One could tell that she was asleep when the cries of a pregnant woman woke her up. The eye bags was a clear evidence.
The other was a young lady in her mid twenties who was sitting restlessly shaking her legs as if she was a traumatized ghost who came for revenge.
She clearly looked familiar with the fact that the her face was equally resembling the face of the woman in labour room, slightly a bit younger. A ring on middle finger a clear sign that she was engaged. Looking at the labour room, pale face suddenly brightened when the cries of a baby was heard from the outside. But as though fear, she paled again waiting almost impatiently for the door to open or for the red light to turn green or turn off entirely.
The last a man, obviously the lady in the labor room's husband. He was doing the pacing the two refused to do.
Nervously, he bit his nails looking the most worried amongst the two. Of course, that's his wife and babies they were hopefully waiting for. But the older lady has had enough of pacing.
"Chang'er. Stop pacing my eyesight is being blurred because of you." The lady said. But he ignored her. He was more worried at the wife than the kids. Though he heard the cries of babies, he was convinced that the kids had really been born to this earth. But what happens to his wife. That stubborn woman, his lovely wife had refused to terminate the baby with the exchange of her life.
SIX MONTHS EARLIER
----------------------------------
Xiao Chang'er and his lovely wife Yang LianLu were still celebrating the soon coming of twins. Though the genders of the fetus was still unknown, but that wasn't what they should be bothered about. Who cares ugly, beautiful, or handsome. Handicapped or perfectly formed bodies, they didn't care, they were going to care for the kids like their life depends on them.
One day, LianLu was an officer worker was carrying a box of files to keep to the store room. Actually, her belly wasn't in the slightest protruding. Nobody at her workplace knew she was pregnant with twins, and she hasn't bothered announcing for many reasons. But unfortunately, the box was slightly heavy and a lady who has been on rivalry with her decided to use this as an opportunity to to play with her. Pushing her and making fun of her. It only took a matter of seconds before she wrapped her arms on her tommy and cried,
"Help! My babies" . Before the culprit could react, blood steamed down her legs. She might be a jackass that wants to be best and only the best, she wasn't that cruel to abandon a woman who found it not only difficult to stand, but also wrapped her hands around her tommy..
LianLu was afraid to stand, afraid to lose her babies. She and her husband had already had names in mind to give the twins, whether male or female. She can't afford to lose them.
Whatever happened later was still a mystery to her. She had woken up lying on the bed. Slightly turning her head, she saw her sister.
"Are you awake?" She asked beaming with smiles.
Sighing faintly, looking around, and saw the bedside equipment like the infusion pump, the IV Pole, the pulse oximeter and the respiratory rate monitor that stood beside her.
"Where's Chang'er?" She asked.
"In the police station..." she answered looking at her with great worry.
"The police station? Why!" She asked with concern. She was about to sit up right when her sister pinned her back down.
"The doctor said you shouldn't move. You might lose your baby if you're careless. You also have to stay in bed for over a month to further determine the situation of the babies" her sister LianLan advised.
She immediately did as she was told but the question kept on bugging her.
"Why is my husband in the station?"
"Arresting that bitch of course. You almost lost the babies"
Bitch? What bitch?..
"The one responsible for your stay here in the hospital. Brother in-law wasn't looking happy at all. She's all lucky that we've decided not to tell mother in-law, otherwise, she will surely not leave the prison bars. Brother in-law was being considerate to lock her in for three years or so. I suppose he's worried you would be against it" LianLan said.
"Xu Bai would be locked up for three years?" She asked still trying to digest what she had just heard.
LianLan nodded, and hummed. You should rest. Brother in-law won't be happy with me if he finds out that I've been talking without letting you rest, I might serve a term or two in jail" she teased.
LianLu sighed. Chang'er, you still haven't changed. She thought to herself.
"How long have I been asleep for?" She asked.
"Today's almost over. And if you've slept in for another day, it would make it a week plus one you've been resting "
"Seven days is already enough for me to get better and work "
LianLan shook her head. "Still, brother in-law won't be..." Her words couldn't be completed when the door was slammed open, and a familiar figure well known to them came in.
A smile beaming on his face.
"You're awake?"
"Mn, not too long ago" she answered to show that her sister hadn't woken her up.
___
Months later, the pain in her belly, became unbearable, she wasn't in labor but she felt like she was going to give birth. She still has five months to go before delivery and it was already a living hell for her.
The situation became unbearable that LianLu spent most of her days in the hospital.
One day, he was called in by the doctor..
"What's wrong with my wife?" He asked trying to maintain a calm visage but his eyes had utterly betrayed him.
"I'm afraid we..." He paused to let the man calm fully.
Chang'er, wasn't finding it funny with the way the doctor kept his mouth shut.
"What happened to her?" He asked again, now feeling itchy at his spot.
"I'm afraid your wife has a serious case of Uterine Rupture. We can only save one and let one die "
Chang'er stumbled backwards feeling the beautiful hope that shined in his life die out.
___
Occasionally, LianLu was taken to the hospital with her younger sister LianLan to keep her company.
The once peaceful home turned chaotic that none agreed with each other. LianLu wanted to keep the babies, she can die for crying out loud but couldn't bear the thought of losing two babies at a time.
While Chang'er wants to terminate the babies. It wasn't abortion nor was it the murder in his heart. They can make more babies as they pleased but can't make more of his wife. She could die. It was really a heated argument that one only knew of one thing to defeat the other.
And as the saying goes; the wife also knows the soft spot of her husband.
LianLu succeed in making Chang'er see reasons...
___
The door slides open with the nurses swooping out of the labour room like armies who defeated a great enemy and finally, the doctor in charge of the delivery came out.
"How's my wife?" Was the first thing that came out of the man's mouth. He can care about the babies later or ask about them later but for now, his wife's life was what mattered most at this point.
"It's a miracle indeed. Your wife really believes in her babies. This is one of the rare cases in this hospital. No CS just a normal delivery with such a disastrous condition. I'm glad to inform you that your wife really has a lot of grace and luck. She's resting in the recovery room. I just suggest you don't disturb her for at least two weeks. That should at least be enough rest for her"
Huge sighs echoed the corridor as the families were indeed glad that the mother was safe.
"Then..., what about the babies are they okay?" The old lady asked.
The doctor smiled giving them a warm sigh.
"Congratulations!!! You gave birth to twins " he announced although he already knew that they know it would be of course twins, he still had the joy to announce that all were saved.
"Can we see the them?" LianLan asked eager to see what her nieces or nephews would look like.
"Of course, this way " the doctor directed them to the nursery were they stood to look at the bouncing baby boys who were being tended to . Those sleeping beauties look like they've got a nice auntie, LianLan chuckled feeling quite proud of her thoughts.
"They're boys" the grandma laughed lightly. "I'm finally going to be a grandmother. Oh! My lovely grandkids" she smiled to herself, proud that she never made a mistake of allowing the both of them to get married to each other.
