Chapter 40: Secrets Unfold

Say what we will about the Order of the Divinic coven, they certainly have an aesthetic. Emily and I are ushered into a gathering room to meet with the elders, and it’s like something from the Tudor period. And I should know, I was there.

Rough wooden beams support the ceiling, and the woodwork on the walls is burnished with age. The whole chamber is lit with dozens of candles, lending it an ethereal glow that makes everything just a little unreal. I never thought I’d miss those days, but there’s something undeniably romantic about the way it all comes together.

The aroma of beeswax from the candles mingles with incense and pungent oils. A densely woven rug covers the floor, and heaps of pillows make the whole thing surprisingly inviting. It’s almost like an orgy could break out as soon as business is wrapped up for the evening.
