Chapter 36: The City that Never Sleeps

Emily

I haven’t been to Manhattan since I was in high school. Some stupid trip where the chaperones spent so much time hovering over us we never really got to see anything. Now I can see every bit of the city, all the way to the otherworldly dangers lurking in the shadows. The things regular New Yorkers would scoff to hear named.

A year ago, I would have scoffed right along with them. Now I know differently.

Everything is familiar and different at the same time. An aura of evil lingers over everything until I’m shaking in my shoes.

“Hey.” Azriel nudges my knee with his. “You okay?”

“I’m fine,” I lie, forcing a smile. “Just anxious to get things moving.” Even behind his sunglasses, I can tell he’s not buying it.

“You sure?” He slouches a little closer and the front of his shirt spreads a bit. God, it would be so easy to melt against that hard chest and get lost among the tattoos. But if I’m going to make it through any of this, I’ve got to be strong on my own.
