“It’s impossible,” Leander whispers, staring glassy-eyed at my sister.
All I can do is agree. It should be impossible, but there’s no question it’s true.
She was gone. Dead for days, lying in state thanks to my insistence that we not bury her. Cold, pale, and utterly lifeless. With a touch of my hand, Raya has come back to us.
To me.
My sister sits up in her finely lacquered coffin, blinking at us in wonder and confusion. My heart is right in the top of my chest, tears of joy welling up in my eyes, ready to spill down my cheeks.
Every inch of me buzzes as pulses of energy race under my skin. Aftershocks from whatever it is I just did.
“Emily?” The sound of my name on Raya’s lips makes me tremble. Her voice is choked with emotion, but it’s not entirely happiness. She’s terrified. Looking around the room, and especially at the casket she’s laid out in, confusion and fear ripple over her in waves. “What’s happening?”
